Dr. Seheult illustrates new findings from Nature (a peer-reviewed journal) about how the SARS-CoV-2 virus may infect T-cells and render them ineffective during COVID 19 infection. A comparison is also made to how HIV infects T-cells with a key difference being that HIV actually utilizes T-cells of the human immune system to replicate itself (and this has not been observed with SARS-CoV-2. Other topics include a medical review by the Mayo Clinic about potential benefits of sauna/hydrothermal therapy (brief core temperature elevation), and a new “vent multiplexer” that allows some individual adjustment when treating multiple patients with one ventilator.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced Tuesday his government would deploy extra resources to long-term care homes battling serious COVID-19 outbreaks, as provincial legislators met to extend a state of emergency declaration for another 28 days.
Ford said he wanted “specialized teams” deployed to these facilities and added that his administration would issue an emergency order declaring that employees of long-term care homes will not be able to work in multiple facilities.
Ford also said Tuesday that schools would not reopen on May 4th, marking the second time the Ontario government has pushed back the date for schools reopening.
British Columbia’s provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix provided an update on the province’s COVID-19 response on Tuesday.
Three more people, all of them residents of long-term care homes, died due to COVID-19 in British Columbia, Henry reported.
She also announced 27 new confirmed cases of the virus, bringing the province’s total to 1,517.
Henry reported one additional long-term care facility outbreak, which brought the number of care homes or assisted living facilities with ongoing active COVID-19 outbreaks to 21.
Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil and the province’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. Robert Strang held a briefing Tuesday afternoon updating the latest COVID-19 numbers and detailing the province’s response to the pandemic.
Strang reported 43 new cases of the virus, marking the biggest one-day spike the province has seen so far, and bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 517.
He said 13 of the 43 new COVID-19 cases that were reported on Tuesday were from Northwood’s care facility in Halifax, where multiple staff and residents have tested positive. Strang said that all residents who have tested positive except for one individual were showing mild symptoms or were asymptomatic.
The rapidly spreading coronavirus outbreak continues to upend life around the world as more countries tighten quarantine measures. President Trump has downplayed the dangers of the pandemic, pressing that some Americans could return to work despite the advice of health experts. More than 500,000 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in the United States, which leads the world in number of cases.

Toronto Mayor John Tory, the city’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Eileen de Villa and Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg, who serves as general manager of the city’s Office of Emergency Management, are expected to provide an update Tuesday on the ongoing response to COVID-19.
On Monday, another long-term care home in the Toronto-area reported 25 of its residents had died from COVID-19, with 49 confirmed cases. Earlier in the day, de Villa said that she was “very concerned” about outbreaks at the city’s long-term care facilities,
