The novel coronavirus could cost 11,000 to 22,000 Canadian lives over the course of the pandemic — and that’s the best-case scenario with the strongest control measures in place to contain the spread of the virus.
That’s according to modelling released by Canadian public health officials for the first time on Thursday, which lays out three different potential scenarios based on strong, medium and weak responses to containing the virus.
It’s important to note projections are estimates based on the best available data so far, and that data can and does change regularly.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo delivered some good news Thursday from Albany as recent data suggests the COVID-19 curve is beginning to flatten in New York State.
He said the state had its lowest net hospitalization increase of 200 on Wednesday, and the lowest change in ICU admissions.
Cuomo said the reason behind that is that New Yorkers are complying with the social distancing measures.
However, Cuomo also discussed different COVID-19 modeling projections which show a range between 55,000 up to 110,000 individuals needing hospitalization.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday afternoon, Ontario Premier Doug Ford described the job losses in his province as a “punch in the gut” and “unthinkable” after it was announced earlier in the day that the province had lost 400,000 jobs in a single month as part of the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ford earlier had outlined the slate of economic relief being offered by his government so far to mitigate the economic impacts of COVID-19.
Doug Ford also explained that his outburst Wednesday regarding the lack of COVID-19 testing in Ontario was not directed at any one individual or entity, but rather his frustrations with “the system” overall.
