Ontario Premier Doug Ford provided an update on Wednesday regarding the province’s efforts to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus. The premier was joined by Dr. Merrilee Fullerton, Minister of Long-Term Care, and Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health.
Ford announced enhanced safety measures for long-term care facilities due to the high-risk seniors face of contracting COVID-19. The new plan entails that long-term care homes in the province facing novel coronavirus outbreaks will be targeted for testing and surveillance, the staff who work at these facilities will have expanded education on infection prevention and control, and the priority when it comes to personal protective equipment distribution will go toward long-term care facilities – in addition to other measures the Ford government hopes will ease the strain on these facilities.
World Health Organization Director General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus responded to President Trump’s decision to withhold financial aid and warned that coronavirus “does not discriminate between rich nations and poor.”

Update: As unemployment reaches record levels in California, Gov. Gavin Newson on April 15 has signed an executive order to extend the hours of the Employment Development Department’s call center to meet the demand. New Brunswick health officials will confirm the most recent COVID-19 cases Wednesday morning and update the province’s response to the novel coronavirus pandemic.
On Tuesday, Premier Blaine Higgs and chief medical officer of health Dr. Jennifer Russell both said they would be looking for a steady drop in COVID-19 cases over the next two weeks in order to determine if the province is past the peak of the pandemic. Higgs said this time period will be “critical” in determining whether additional testing is needed or whether some protective measures could be scaled back.
A recent Harvard analysis is the first study to show a statistical link between COVID-19 deaths and other diseases associated with long-term exposure to fine particulate matter.
In an analysis of 3,080 counties in the United States, researchers at the Harvard University T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that higher levels of the tiny, dangerous particles in air known as PM 2.5 were associated with higher death rates from the disease.
The paper goes on to suggest that just a slight increase in long-term pollution exposure could have serious coronavirus-related consequences, even accounting for other factors like smoking rates and population density.
US President Donald Trump has instructed his administration to halt funding of the World Health Organization. Trump says the WHO failed in its early response to the coronavirus. The US president, who has himself come under fire for his handling of the pandemic, said the WHO should have done a better job of investigating initial reports in China. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres responded by saying that now was not the time to end support for the WHO. He said its work was “absolutely critical” to the global effort to combat COVID-19.

Trump said at a White House briefing that the United States would suspend funding to the organization while officials conduct a review “to assess the World Health Organization’s role in severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus.”
The president criticized the WHO for opposing large-scale travel restrictions and accused it of failing to quickly vet and share accurate information on COVID-19.

In the fight against the coronavirus, there is still one big unknown: how many people have actually contracted it, maybe even without showing any symptoms? One way to answer this question is through antibody tests. An antibody is a protective protein produced by the immune system to destroy harmful viruses and infections.
