In Ottawa, Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s chief public health officer, and Dr. Howard Njoo, deputy chief public health officer, join federal ministers to provide an update on the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.

After The Telegraph revealed that Public Health England has for the first time approved a test for use, Edward Argar said that the Government was working to purchase “as many” as it could for use in the UK.

It is understood that the Department of Health is now in negotiations with the Swiss healthcare company Roche to buy millions of the kits, after the accuracy of the test was given the green light by experts at PHE’s Porton Down facility last week.

The development of an accurate antibody test, which shows whether someone has recovered from the virus, has long been seen as key to helping Britain get back to work. read more

Mayor John Tory, joined by Toronto’s medical officer of health Dr. Eileen de Villa and Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg provided an update on the city’s COVID-19 cases and the ongoing response to the pandemic on Wednesday.

Tory said on Tuesday that urgent joint action by the federal and provincial governments to support cities of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) is needed now.

Mayor Tory also thanked the Canadian National Exhibition board for the “right decision” of cancelling the CNE exhibition this summer, adding that “health must come first” and that now there is an opportunity to plan for a modern CNE in 2021. read more

Ontario’s chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams provided an update Friday on the latest COVID-19 cases in the province and discussed the public health agency’s ongoing response to the pandemic.

Ontario reported 477 new cases of the COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, on Friday, bringing the provincial total to 19,598 cases. The death toll has risen to 1,540, as 63 more deaths were reported. Meanwhile, 13,990 people have recovered from COVID-19, which is 71.4 per cent of cases. read more

Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan spoke on the Covid-19 situation in India and said that India is prepared for the worst situation. “Recovery rate has climbed up to 29.9%, doubling rate for the last three days has been about 11 days,” the health minister said. Dr Vardhan also spoke on the testing capacity of India and said the country has capacity of about 95,000 tests. “We have tested 15,25,631 tests till now,” he added.

Federal ministers and public health officials provided an update on the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic on Wednesday morning.

Minister Duclos opened the briefing by paying respects to the victims of last week’s tragic CAF helicopter crash. The 6 crew members will be honoured with a repatriation ceremony on Wednesday at CFB Trenton.

Canada has now reported over 4,000 deaths linked to the novel coronavirus, including 1,274 new cases.

Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah on Saturday revealed that Malaysia will be one the countries collaborating with China on a vaccine for Covid-19.

The Health director-general said China, which is currently in its second phase of testing the vaccine is expected to complete trials by December.

British Columbia’s provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and health minister Adrian Dix provided an update on the latest COVID-19 cases in the province and discussed the government’s ongoing response to the pandemic on Thursday.

Dr. Henry reported 25 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday and two additional deaths. There are 2,112 total cases, with 1,322 having recovered.

She also said that the province won’t have any large groups gathering this summer, but people can look at making their contact circles “slightly bigger.” read more

World Health Organization (WHO) officials provided an update on the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic on Wednesday.

WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Monday that the coronavirus pandemic is “far from over” as lockdowns begin in ease in Europe.

He said the organization continues to urge nations to find, isolate, contact trace and treat all cases confirmed to ensure countries continue to have declining COVID-19 numbers.
