Minister of Health Zweli Mkhize will on Tuesday shed more light on the future of the Covid-19 lockdown. Mkhizeā€™s briefing comes after President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Thursday that some of the lockdown regulations will be relaxed to allow limited economic activity. Mkhize will be joined by Deputy Minister of Health Dr Joe Phaahla, provincial MECs and experts from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD).

Ontarioā€™s chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams provided an update Saturday on the latest COVID-19 cases in the province and discussed the government’s ongoing response to the pandemic.

Williams reported that the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Ontario had surpassed 10,000 as 485 additional cases were reported Saturday morning. Thirty-six new deaths were announced, bringing the death toll in the province to 514.

He also stated that the Greater Toronto Area has over 56 per cent of the cases within the province, and that 108 long-term care homes in Ontario had COVID-19 outbreaks. read more

The death toll in Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak in China, was revised upward by 50 percent on Friday. President Donald Trump announced during a daily briefing alongside the coronavirus task force on Tuesday that the U.S. is going to be halting funding to the World Health Organization.

ā€œToday Iā€™m instructing my administration to halt funding of the World Health Organization while a review is conducted to assess the World Health Organizationā€™s role in severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus,ā€ Trump said.

Singapore authorities have now made it mandatory to wear a mask when stepping out of the house, with immediate effect. The new requirement was announced on Tuesday (Apr 14) at a press conference given by the multi-ministry task force tackling COVID-19. “We remain in a critical situation,” Health Minister Gan Kim Yong said, noting the sharp increase in cases, in particular, among foreign workers in dormitories. Toronto Mayor John Tory, the city’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Eileen de Villa and Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg, who serves as general manager of the city’s Office of Emergency Management, are expected to provide an update Tuesday on the ongoing response to COVID-19.

Politicians returned to Ottawa over the weekend to debate the Liberal government’s emergency COVID-19 legislation which would allow companies to access a 75 percent wage subsidy for each employee.

Finance Minister Bill Morneau said on Saturday that the time frame for the payout of the wage subsidy for businesses has been moved up with the hope of occurring within two to five weeks, but are hoping to have the payout be closer to the shorter end of the time. read more
