May.13 — Mike Ryan, head of the World Health Organization’s health emergencies program, says Covid-19 “may never go away,” and that the “massive moonshot” of finding a vaccine will be only the first step toward eradicating the disease. He speaks at a press briefing in Geneva. (Excerpts)

The Covid-19 coronavirus could become endemic like HIV, the World Health Organization has said, warning against any attempt to predict how long it would keep circulating and calling for a ‘massive effort’ to counter it. The organisation’s emergencies expert Mike Ryan said: ‘I think it’s important we are realistic and I don’t think anyone can predict when this disease will disappear’

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi discussed what’s included in the $3 trillion coronavirus relief package that House Democrats rolled out on Tuesday.

Malaysians will not be allowed to travel home for Hari Raya, Hari Gawai and Kaamatan, said Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in his announcement to extend the conditional movement control order (MCO) to June 9.

Restrictions to travel during the festive season within the same state would be eased however, and a maximum of only 20 people allowed in the same place at the same time.

Three children in New York have died from a rare inflammatory syndrome believed to be linked to the novel coronavirus, Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Saturday, adding that the state is working with the CDC to investigate the syndrome.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said on Saturday during a COVID-19 briefing that three children in New York State have died from a rare inflammatory syndrome believed to be linked to COVID-19. The illness shares symptoms with toxic shock and Kawasaki disease.

Cuomo said state health officials were reviewing 73 cases where children exposed to COVID-19 also exhibited symptoms of the syndrome, which included inflammation of the blood vessels. He said this inflammation could then in turn could cause heart problems. read more

U.S. President Donald Trump has been eager to reopen the economy, despite a continued rise in COVID-19 infections and dire projections of deaths. Saving the economy from total devastation could help Trump in the polls this November.

In an interview with FRANCE 24, Taiwan’s Vice President Chen Chien-jen, an epidemiologist by training, discussed his country’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, while criticising the response of China and the World Health Organization. Chen refused to rule out the “possibility” that the coronavirus originated in a Chinese laboratory in Wuhan. He also expressed concern about a second wave of the virus appearing in autumn or winter.

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday that the world must work hard to prepare for the next pandemic while responding to the current COVID-19 crisis, adding that it’s an opportunity to build resilient health systems around the world which can withstand any potential future pandemics.

Dr. Tedros said that WHO, UNICEF and the International Federation of the Red Cross have published a guide for countries on how to maintain community-based healthcare systems in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. read more

Boris Johnson revealed that lockdown measures could change on Monday – as he faced up against Labour boss Sir Keir Starmer at PMQs for the first time.

The PM will address the nation on Sunday with a roadmap for how to tweak the current lockdown measures, some of which may come into effect the very next day.

The PM will lay out how he hopes to get Britain back to work and school once again, giving hope to millions of people that they could see restrictions lifted.

And he admitted today that some tweaks may come into effect on Monday, though no huge plans are on the cards. read more
