Coronavirus outbreak: WHO says world must work hard to prepare for the next pandemic | FULL
World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday that the world must work hard to prepare for the next pandemic while responding to the current COVID-19 crisis, adding that it’s an opportunity to build resilient health systems around the world which can withstand any potential future pandemics.
Dr. Tedros said that WHO, UNICEF and the International Federation of the Red Cross have published a guide for countries on how to maintain community-based healthcare systems in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The guidance includes practical recommendations on sustaining essential services and leveraging community health workers for the response of COVID-19 and the new normal after the pandemic while keeping them safe.
He stressed for countries easing lockdowns to follow WHO’s recommendations while lifting their restrictions, saying that “the risk of returning to lockdowns is very real if countries don’t manage the transition extremely carefully.”
Dr. Michael Ryan, WHO's executive director for Emergency Programmes said that contact tracing apps are helpful in tracing the transmission of the virus but can’t replace tracing methods done by humans and that they must be used for the sole purpose of coronavirus contact tracing.
