British Columbia’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix provided an update on the COVID-19 response in the province on Wednesday.
The province confirmed 45 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours. That brings the total number of people who have tested positive in British Columbia to 1336.
Henry said there has been a drop in hospitalizations in the province over the past 24 hours.
Five more British Columbians that have died as a result of the virus, bringing the province’s total number of deaths to 48.
Alberta Premier Jason Kenney, joined by Dr. Deena Hinshaw and AHS CEO Dr. Verna Yiu, provided a provincial update on the COVID-19 situation Wednesday, including the public release of full projections of the pandemic.
Three new COVID-19 fatalities were announced on Wednesday, which brings Alberta’s death toll from the pandemic to 29.
The provincial government said that Alberta has recorded 50 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 over the past 24 hours, bringing the total case number to 1,423. Of those cases, 519 people have now recovered.

U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the federal government had amassed 30 million hydroxychloroquine tablets, which he said would distributed “in large amounts” to U.S. states as they continue to deal with the impact of COVID-19.
The president has continued to promote the anti-malaria drug as a treatment for COVID-19 although scientists say more testing is needed to determine if it is safe and effective in the fight against the virus.
Trump also denied that he had any stake in companies producing hydroxychloroquine.
Trump made the comments during the daily briefing of the U.S. Coronavirus Task Force, alongside top U.S. health officials, Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

New York governor Andrew Cuomo said on Wednesday that New York state has seen its highest single-day increase in deaths due to COVID-19 on Tuesday with 779 deaths recorded.
Governor Cuomo said that the number of deaths is expected to “continue to rise as current hospitalized patients pass away due to COVID-19.”
Cuomo also said that the state has lost more people to COVID-19 than it lost during the 9/11 World Trade Centre attacks.
New York has a death toll of 6,268 due to the novel coronavirus while 9/11 caused 2,753 deaths among New Yorkers.

As the death toll of Covid-19 keeps rising, scientists are still uncertain about where this deadly virus came from in the first place.
It’s believed that it jumped from animals to humans. So far pangolins and bats that were sold at the wet market in Wuhan in China are the most likely candidates. But the virus doesn’t stay with humans. There are signs that it’s also spreading to other animals.
A tiger at the Bronx Zoo in New York City has tested positive for COVID-19, after developing a dry cough. A couple of lions also show signs of the infection.
And there are reports in Hong Kong that dogs have tested positive, without having any of the usual symptoms. Scientists say that cats are very susceptible to the virus. Many people around the world are now worried about what that means for them and their pets.
And farmers also want to know how dangerous the virus could be to their livestock. Pigs, chicken and ducks, at least, are not likely to get infected. But what about the rest?

Ontario Premier Doug Ford on Wednesday said the number of COVID-19 tests carried out in the province has been “unacceptable” since the beginning of the pandemic.
Premier Ford made the comments during a daily briefing on the province’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, alongside Health Minister Christine Elliott and Labour Minister Monte McNaughton.
Ford acknowledged that health officials were plagued by a lack of reagent and other problems that resulted in a testing backlog, but said those issues are now resolved and that the province needs to ramp up testing immediately.
Quebec Premier François Legault and health officials provided an update on the ongoing provincial response to COVID-19.
On Wednesday, Quebec’s public health officials released projections that the province could see between 1,263 and 8,860 deaths by the end of April because of the novel coronavirus pandemic even amid sweeping measures aimed at curbing the spread of the virus.

Saskatchewan’s health authority is expected to provide the projections for COVID-19 in the province on Wednesday.
Saskatchewan health authorities reported seven new confirmed cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, on Tuesday.
It brings the total number of cases in the province to 260 since the first presumptive case was reported on March 11.

Another 828 #coronavirus patients have died in hospital in England, taking the total to 6,483.
It is the largest overall increase reported by NHS England so far.
COVID-19-related deaths have risen in Scotland by 70 to 366.
A record rise was seen in Wales, where health officials have confirmed that another 33 patients have lost their lives.
The number of lives lost in Northern Ireland has risen by five to a total of 78.
A total figure for the UK will be released later today to take into account differences in reporting between the four nations.
