Manitoba’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Brent Roussin reported two new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday.

The two new cases are related to a cluster of cases in the Prairie Mountain Health Region, which now totals seven.

Roussin said the workplace is not related to health care or food supply, and does not interact greatly with the general public.

The total number of cases in the province stands at 284, as of Wednesday.

Dr. Roussin also reported five hospitalizations from COVID-19, with none of them in ICU, and 242 recoveries. read more

On Wednesday British Columbia Premier John Horgan along with provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and health minister Adrian Dix announced how the province will begin to reopen the economy starting in mid-May.

Among those businesses slated to reopen in mid-May are certain health services, retail outlets, restaurants, salons and museums.

Hotels, resorts and parks could begin reopening in June while some entertainment venues would be slated for reopening in July. However, large concerts would not be included in this. read more

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday that the world must work hard to prepare for the next pandemic while responding to the current COVID-19 crisis, adding that it’s an opportunity to build resilient health systems around the world which can withstand any potential future pandemics.

Dr. Tedros said that WHO, UNICEF and the International Federation of the Red Cross have published a guide for countries on how to maintain community-based healthcare systems in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. read more

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo holds his daily press conference on the Covid-19 outbreak, which has infected more than 321,100 people across the state as of Wednesday, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. On Tuesday, Cuomo rebuked President Donald Trump’s complaint that it’s unfair for Republicans to provide “bailouts” to Democrat-led states suffering from the coronavirus pandemic. “It’s not red or blue, it’s red, white and blue. This coronavirus doesn’t pick Democrats or Republicans. It doesn’t kill Democrats or Republicans, it kills Americans,” Cuomo said at his daily press briefing.   read more

Federal ministers and public health officials provided an update on the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic on Wednesday morning.

Minister Duclos opened the briefing by paying respects to the victims of last week’s tragic CAF helicopter crash. The 6 crew members will be honoured with a repatriation ceremony on Wednesday at CFB Trenton.

Canada has now reported over 4,000 deaths linked to the novel coronavirus, including 1,274 new cases.

Dr. Eileen de Villa, Toronto’s medical officer of health, said during Tuesday’s briefing that public health officials will start asking those who test positive for COVID-19 to provide information on their race, income, household size, Indigenous identity or First Nations status after emerging evidence from other jurisdictions suggesting that COVID-19 may impact some groups more than others.

The city’s top doctor added that her team has conducted analysis which suggests similar trends in Toronto, showing that people living in lower-income neighbourhoods, in neighbourhoods with a high proportion of recent immigrants, and areas with high unemployment rates had higher rates of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations. read more

Alberta’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw provided an update on the most recent numbers of COVID-19 in the province on Tuesday and discussed the government’s ongoing response to the pandemic. The province’s Health Minister Tyler Shandro was also present during the briefing.

It was announced that Alberta will be receiving a $1.7-million donation from the Calgary Health Trust, which would help boost the province’s COVID-19 testing capacity to more than 16,000 tests a day by June. read more

Quebec Premier François Legault announced the loosening of some coronavirus-related measures on Tuesday by allowing healthy seniors in private residences to go for walks outside without supervision, and to be able to see their loved ones at a safe distance during the COVID-19 pandemic.

These new measures are aimed to lessen psychological distress from the pandemic and the ability for seniors to regain their independence, Legault said.

The premier also said that the provincial health-care system is missing 11,200 workers. He said they are absent either because they are sick, vulnerable to contracting COVID-19 or scared to go to work. read more

After more than two weeks without any increase, New Brunswick has another confirmed case of COVID-19.

New Brunswick is reporting one new case of COVID-19 Tuesday, the first new case in more than two weeks.

There have now been 119 positive cases in the province, and 118 of them have recovered.

Dr. Jennifer Russell, New Brunswick’s chief medical officer of health, says the latest case involves a person aged 30-39 in the Fredericton region.

It’s not known yet if the latest case is travel-related or community transmission. read more

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to hold his daily COVID-19 briefing in Ottawa on Tuesday and will discuss the ongoing government response to the pandemic, including support for agricultural sectors.

The government had been scheduled at the end of March to release its first budget since winning re-election as a minority. But that release was scrapped when the House of Commons suspended on March 13 as part of a nationwide shutdown to try to limit the spread of COVID-19.

British Columbia’s provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix are expected to unveil the province’s latest modelling numbers on the coronavirus pandemic.

The information is to be presented as part of the health officials’ daily COVID-19 update.

The updated numbers on Monday are being used to determine next steps for easing restrictions on the economy, schools and other areas. Premier John Horgan is set to announce these next steps later this week.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford is expected to make an announcement and discuss the province’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic on Monday.

Ford announced on Friday that the province would allow a small, select number of businesses to reopen on May 4.

They would include seasonal businesses such as garden centres and nurseries with curbside pick-up and delivery only, as well as lawn care and landscaping services. Also included are automatic and self-serve car washes, and auto dealerships by appointment only. read more

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to hold his daily COVID-19 briefing on Monday and will discuss the ongoing government response to the pandemic.

On Sunday, the prime minister said the federal government would invest over $240 million to bring health care online, expanding tools and creating new virtual platforms for mental health and primary care during the coronavirus pandemic.

Trudeau also briefed journalists on an additional $175 million to support Canadian company AbCellera for what he called “very promising COVID-19 research” and introduced a new COVID-19 supply council. read more

Ontario’s chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams released the province’s latest COVID-19 numbers on Saturday, confirming that there were 511 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of cases in the province to 17,119.

He added that there were 55 new deaths reported in the province, bringing the total fatalities attributed to the virus to 1,176.

Over 11,300 cases are considered revolved, which makes up 66.5 per cent of all confirmed cases in Ontario.

Saturday’s report marks an increase in cases of 3.1 per cent compared to the day prior, while Friday saw an increase of 2.6 per cent. read more

Ontario’s chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams and associate chief medical officer of health Dr. Barbara Yaffe are expected to provide an update on the latest COVID-19 cases in the province and discuss the public health agency’s ongoing response to the pandemic on Friday.

Dr. Williams reported Thursday that Ontario saw 459 new COVID-19 cases to bring the total to 16,187. The province also had 86 additional deaths to bring that total to 1,082.
