Ontario Education Minister Stephen Lecce announced Wednesday that the provincial government had reached an agreement with school boards and unions to allow for the “voluntary” redeployment of education workers to facilities struggling during the novel coronavirus pandemic, including long-term care homes, hospitals and shelters.

Lecce made the announcement Wednesday, during a daily briefing alongside Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Deputy Premier and Health Minister Christine Elliott.

Ford also addressed questions regarding Stage 1 of the province’s relaunch strategy, which he has said will be unveiled on Thursday. read more

Ontario’s chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams provided an update Friday on the latest COVID-19 cases in the province and discussed the public health agency’s ongoing response to the pandemic.

Ontario reported 477 new cases of the COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, on Friday, bringing the provincial total to 19,598 cases. The death toll has risen to 1,540, as 63 more deaths were reported. Meanwhile, 13,990 people have recovered from COVID-19, which is 71.4 per cent of cases. read more

Ontario Premier Doug Ford is expected to make an announcement Saturday and discuss the province’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, alongside Deputy Premier and Health Minister Christine Elliott and Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks Jeff Yurek.

Ontario reported 477 new cases of the novel coronavirus on Friday, bringing the provincial total to 19,598 cases. The death toll has risen to 1,540, as 63 more deaths were reported.

Meanwhile, 13,990 people have recovered from COVID-19 which is 71.4 per cent of cases. Friday’s report marks an increase of 2.5 per cent in total cumulative cases. It also marks the highest number of cases in a single-day since the beginning of the week. read more

Ontario Premier Doug Ford and other officials are expected to make an announcement and discuss the province’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic on Thursday.

Ford announced on Wednesday the gradual reopening of select non-essential businesses to begin at the end of this week, from nurseries and garden centres this Friday, hardware and safety supply stores on Saturday, and retail stores with street entrances will be allowed to open for curbside pickup only starting on Monday.

The government also extended all emergency orders until May 19 and hydro rate relief for residences, farmers and small businesses have been extended until May 31. read more

Ontario Premier Doug Ford is expected to make an announcement and discuss the province’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic on Monday.

Ford announced on Friday that the province would allow a small, select number of businesses to reopen on May 4.

They would include seasonal businesses such as garden centres and nurseries with curbside pick-up and delivery only, as well as lawn care and landscaping services. Also included are automatic and self-serve car washes, and auto dealerships by appointment only. read more

Ontario’s chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams released the province’s latest COVID-19 numbers on Saturday, confirming that there were 511 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of cases in the province to 17,119.

He added that there were 55 new deaths reported in the province, bringing the total fatalities attributed to the virus to 1,176.

Over 11,300 cases are considered revolved, which makes up 66.5 per cent of all confirmed cases in Ontario.

Saturday’s report marks an increase in cases of 3.1 per cent compared to the day prior, while Friday saw an increase of 2.6 per cent. read more

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said on Saturday the province is busy preparing for flooding season even as it continues to deal with the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic.

Ford was joined by Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry John Yakabuski, Solicitor General Sylvia Jones and Health Minister Christine Elliott during a briefing on Saturday, May 2.

The premier said his government has set up a command centre in Peterborough, Ont., where water flow levels are monitored and has also sent surveillance flights over the northern parts of the province to monitor ice breaks. read more

Ontario Premier Doug Ford, alongside Minister of Health Christine Elliott and Minister of Education Stephen Lecce announced Wednesday that Ontario would be expanding its list of those eligible for emergency child care.

Lecce said those now eligible would also include grocery store workers, pharmaceutical workers, retirement home staff, Ontario truckers, the Canadian Armed Forces, and those who support those who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Ontario reported 347 new cases of the novel coronavirus on Wednesday, the lowest single-day increase in more than three weeks, bringing the provincial total to 15,728 cases. read more

Sarkaria announced the launch of an online portal called COVID-19: Tackling the Barriers, which is intended for the province to collect feedback from Ontarians, including small business owners or health-care workers, on the best response during the pandemic. He said “particularly, we are looking for temporary rule or regulation changes to assist our health-care system and meeting emergency needs.” read more

Ontario Education Minister Stephen Lecce announced on Sunday that all publicly-funded schools in the province will remain closed until at least May 31 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, an extension of the previous order. The provincial government made the decision to extend the closures based on advice from Ontario’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. David Williams, and the command table. Lecce indicated May 29 in the media briefing, as May 30 and 31 fall on a weekend.

Lecce clarified that all private schools and daycare centres will also remain closed, but those are managed under the province’s emergency order. read more

The provincial government announced a $4 per hour raise over the next four months for front-line workers who are helping fight COVID-19.

Workers will also receive a monthly bonus of $250 if they work more than 100 hours in a month over the next four months.

The premier said the bonus will be eligible for workers with long-term care homes, retirement homes, emergency shelters, supportive housing, social services congregate care settings, corrections institutions and youth justice facilities, home and community care providers and some staff in hospitals. read more

Ford said that a novel coronavirus vaccine is required to “go back to normal,” and that they will be funding “the most advanced medical research” in Ontario. read more

Ford announced enhanced safety measures for long-term care facilities due to the high-risk seniors face of contracting COVID-19. The new plan entails that long-term care homes in the province facing novel coronavirus outbreaks will be targeted for testing and surveillance, the staff who work at these facilities will have expanded education on infection prevention and control, and the priority when it comes to personal protective equipment distribution will go toward long-term care facilities – in addition to other measures the Ford government hopes will ease the strain on these facilities. read more

Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced Tuesday his government would deploy extra resources to long-term care homes battling serious COVID-19 outbreaks, as provincial legislators met to extend a state of emergency declaration for another 28 days.

Ford said he wanted “specialized teams” deployed to these facilities and added that his administration would issue an emergency order declaring that employees of long-term care homes will not be able to work in multiple facilities.

Ford also said Tuesday that schools would not reopen on May 4th, marking the second time the Ontario government has pushed back the date for schools reopening. read more
