Ontario Premier Doug Ford provided an update on Wednesday regarding the province's efforts to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus. The premier was joined by Dr. Merrilee Fullerton, Minister of Long-Term Care, and Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health.

Ford announced enhanced safety measures for long-term care facilities due to the high-risk seniors face of contracting COVID-19. The new plan entails that long-term care homes in the province facing novel coronavirus outbreaks will be targeted for testing and surveillance, the staff who work at these facilities will have expanded education on infection prevention and control, and the priority when it comes to personal protective equipment distribution will go toward long-term care facilities - in addition to other measures the Ford government hopes will ease the strain on these facilities.

Fullerton said that "over the next 48 hours" Ontario will be launching more "aggressive testing, screening and surveillance" by screening all symptomatic staff and residents of long-term care homes in order to protect that vulnerable population, as well as asymptomatic contacts of confirmed cases.
