The number of confirmed coronavirus cases around Australia is sitting at 5,362.

New South Wales remains the state with the highest number of cases.

The rapidly spreading coronavirus outbreak continues to upend life around the world as more countries tighten quarantine measures. President Trump has downplayed the dangers of the pandemic, pressing that some Americans could return to work despite the advice of health experts. More than 200,000 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in the United States, which now leads the world in number of cases. More people have died in the U.S. from the coronavirus than in the 9/11 attacks.

Ontario government has revealed projection numbers for the province to be just under 1,600 COVID-19 deaths and 80,000 cases by the end of April, if the current measures in place are upheld.

President and CEO of Public Health Ontario Dr. Peter Donnelly alongside President and CEO of Ontario Health Matthew Anderson and Dean of the Dalla Lana School of Public Health Adalsteinn Brown revealed the projected numbers at Queen’s Park on Friday.

The data also indicated that Ontario would have seen 300,000 cases of COVID-19 and 6,000 deaths by the end of the month if there was no government action or intervention. read more

The number of confirmed coronavirus-related deaths in the UK has increased by 684 – bringing the total to 3,605.

The number of deaths, in the 24 hours up to 5pm on Thursday, marks the largest increase so far, with the previous day recording 569 people.

The Department of Health said as of 9am on Friday, 38,168 people had tested positive for the virus across the UK.

Sweden’s refusal to go into coronavirus lockdown is leading the country towards catastrophe, scientists have warned. Daily life is carrying on as normal despite the rest of Europe being in lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, with pubs, schools, restaurants and cinemas all still open. Sweden has so far seen 4,947 cases of the coronavirus and 239 deaths as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The government says lockdown would lead to an economic disaster. Although the Scandinavian country’s relaxed “wait and see” approach contrasts with most of the rest of Europe the government says it has no immediate plans to change its liberal ways. read more

Two cruise ships on which four people with Covid-19 have died have docked in Florida – after weeks of uncertainty at sea.

The Zaandam and its sister ship the Rotterdam both arrived in Fort Lauderdale after they’d been barred from ports in South America. They’d also been told they couldn’t dock in Florida – a decision later reversed.

Passengers fit for travel will disembark and fly home. Several dozen with mild symptoms will stay on board for a quarantine period. The 14 people with severe symptoms will be treated in local hospitals. read more

All preschools and student care centres in Singapore will suspend their general services for a month from Apr 8, Minister Desmond Lee announced on Friday (Apr 3). Preschools will remain open for the children of parents who work in essential services – such as healthcare – and are unable to find alternative childcare. Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong addressed the nation live on Friday (Apr 3) on the COVID-19 situation. He announced “significantly stricter measures” to contain the spread of the virus. Most workplaces will be closed and schools will move to home-based learning. Singaporeans are advised to stay home and to go out only for essential services.

0:10 Australia has more than 5000 confirmed cases. A man in his 80s has died overnight in Victoria, taking the national toll to 25.
