HAPPENING NOW—CUOMO UPDATE: New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo holds a news conference on the latest coronavirus developments. Cuomo announced yesterday that the state had another decrease in their daily death toll, reporting 540 coronavirus deaths in a single day, down from 630 just a day earlier. The governor said that though ‘you could argue we are past the plateau and starting to descend,’ the crisis is still far from over, as more than 2,000 people with coronavirus symptoms were hospitalized on Friday alone. Cuomo also continued to call for assistance from the federal government in terms of testing capabilities, adding that ‘I’m not asking the federal government to do more than they need to. But we do need their coordination. We need their partnership.’

Two recent antibody testing studies in the United States may give insight into how widespread COVID-19 actually is – which may also mean the fatality rate is lower than initially thought – but there may be problems with the accuracy of using this data in a prediction model. Dr. Seheult also illustrates the key differences between different types of hypoxemia (low blood oxygen): V/Q mismatch, shunting, and diffusion abnormalities. COVID-19 infection may involve all three of these to varying degrees and MIGET (multiple inert gas elimination technique) studies may unlock some of the mystery.

Australia should use the immediate post-COVID-19 period to develop a bigger “high tech, flexible manufacturing industry,” according to former Fortescue CEO Nev Power.
Manufacturing used to the bastion of the Australian economy but has declined significantly over the past fifty years.
Manufacturing made up nearly 30 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) in the 1960s, however the sector now has slumped to around six per cent of GDP as many businesses move offshore.
The federal government has established the COVID-19 Coordination Commission to identify how business, including manufacturing, can thrive in a post-COVID-19 world.

COVID-19 update – President Donald Trump said China is “way ahead of US” in Coronavirus death toll at the US taskforce daily briefing.
He said: “We’re not number one, China is number one.
“China is number one by a lot. It’s not even close.
“They are way ahead of us in terms of deaths.
“You know it. I know it. They know it.
“But you don’t want to report it. Why? You’ll have to explain that.”
When being questioned about the repercussions for who started the coronavirus outbreak, Trump said: “If they (China) were knowingly responsible then yes there should be consequences…”

Ontario Premier Doug Ford was joined by Health Minister Christine Elliott, Ross Romano, minister of colleges and universities, and Dr. Merrilee Fullerton, minister of long-term care on Saturday to announce that the province would be investing $20 million towards “Ontario-based research into COVID-19” to help find a vaccine for the virus.
Ford said that a novel coronavirus vaccine is required to “go back to normal,” and that they will be funding “the most advanced medical research” in Ontario.
