Quebec Premier François Legault and provincial health officials provided an update on Tuesday about the province’s new COVID-19 cases and the government’s ongoing response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The premier announced that the province’s updated death toll now stands at 1,041, which includes an increase of 102 more deaths as total COVID-19 cases top 20,000 in the province. The majority of deaths — 850 — to date originated in the province’s long-term care homes, according to Legault. He said there were 80 such facilities where the spread of the virus is not under control. read more

U.S. President Donald Trump and members of the U.S. coronavirus task force provided an update Monday on the administration’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trump said some areas hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic appear “to have turned the corner” with death rates down “very, very substantially.” He predicted the country would have a “economic resurgence” as states prepared to reopen.

The rate at which Covid-19 cases are doubling in India has gone up to 7.5 days from every 3.4 days before the national lockdown was imposed on March 24, underlining the impact of stringent social distancing and containment measures, officials said.

As of now, 18 states have a better doubling rate than the national average of 7.5 days with Kerala and Odisha registering a rate of more than 30 days. In Kerala, the time of doubling of cases is now 72.2 days, whereas it is 39.8 days in Odisha. “The doubling rate of Covid-19 cases calculated using growth over the past seven days indicates that India’s doubling rate has improved,” Lav Agarwal, joint secretary in the health ministry, said. read more

Another 823 hospital patients in the UK have died after contracting the coronavirus, taking the total to 17,337.

There were 18,206 tests carried out in the 24 hours up to 9am on Tuesday 21 April – far short of the 100,000 a day the government has promised by the end of April.

A further 778 COVID-19 deaths were reported in England, 70 in Scotland and 25 in Wales.

The totals in each country are now:

England – 15,607
Scotland – 985
Wales – 609
Northern Ireland – 194

The number of coronavirus cases in India has increased to 18,601 on Tuesday while the death toll has surged to 590, according to the latest data by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Of the total number of cases 3,251 people have been cured and discharged from hospitals.

Coronavirus case tally has 3,000-mark in Mumbai as 155 more test positive, while the death toll has surged to 138 after addition of 7 fatalities, according to the civic body Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

On a positive note, the doubling rate of COVID-19 has slowed from 3.4 days to 7.5. But, out of 100 cases, 80 per cent cases are asymptomatic. read more
