Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced $8.8 billion of funding towards fight coronanvirus at a summit aiming to raise money for lifesaving vaccines for children in the world’s poorest countries.

Mr Johnson hosted the World Vaccine Summit, where more than 50 countries and organisations made pledges to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, which immunises children in developing countries.

Efforts to find a coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine are about to take another major step forward, though declining cases could actually hamper those efforts.

World leaders and representatives from over 50 countries virtually joined the Global Vaccine Summit hosted by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Thursday to raise funds for GAVI (The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations), a public-private global health partnership.

The Global Vaccine Summit was able to raise 8.8 billion dollars for routine vaccinations in some of the world’s poorest countries.

Boris Johnson called for donations of at least $7.4 billion for GAVI to immunize further 300 million children in the world’s poorest countries by 2025 against diseases such as polio, diphtheria and measles. read more

Chinese scientists working on a COVID-19 vaccine have told Sky News they are “99%” sure it will be effective.

Sinovac, a Beijing-based biotech company, currently has its coronavirus vaccine in stage 2 trials, with more than 1,000 volunteers participating.

“Everything does not depend on a vaccine,” White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany responded when asked whether the administration would mandate a coronavirus vaccine to achieve herd immunity in the country. “We’re working aggressively to get one,” McEnany explained, but noted there hasn’t been a correlation between reopening and infection cases.

Australia’s first human trials of a potential COVID-19 vaccine started in Melbourne today, with about 130 people involved in the program.

Clinical research organisation the Nucleus Network will be in charge of the early stages of testing the vaccine NVX-CoV2373, before the trial expands to Brisbane within a week.

The participants are healthy people between 18 and 59 years old.

Victoria’s Parliamentary Secretary for Medical Research, Frank McGuire, said the trial was a significant step forward in the race for a coronavirus vaccine. read more
