Apr.22 — Bloomberg Intelligence’s Sam Fazeli wraps up the latest efforts by European drug companies, academics and scientists to find a vaccine for the Covid-19 virus. He speaks on “Bloomberg Surveillance.”

Ontario Premier Doug Ford was joined by Health Minister Christine Elliott, Ross Romano, minister of colleges and universities, and Dr. Merrilee Fullerton, minister of long-term care on Saturday to announce that the province would be investing $20 million towards ā€œOntario-based research into COVID-19ā€ to help find a vaccine for the virus.

Ford said that a novel coronavirus vaccine is required to ā€œgo back to normal,ā€ and that they will be funding ā€œthe most advanced medical researchā€ in Ontario. read more

Scientists in Oxford are hoping to have created a million doses of a coronavirus vaccine by September. They are one of a group of research teams who are to receive funding from a new government task force leading the search for a vaccine.

The effort to create a vaccine is a huge global undertaking and there are warnings that there is no guarantee of success.

The pressure to carry out more tests on frontline staff for coronavirus infection is continuing. The UK government says testing will be extended to the police, fire and prison services. read more

Coronavirus update – The UK’s search for a COVID-19 vaccine will be turbocharged with a multi-million pound coronavirus funding boost, Business Secretary Alok Sharma said tonight.

Ministers last night unveiled a further 21 projects which will get a slice of a Ā£14million to help find a way out of the deadly pandemic, but it will still take many months to develop.

And they unveiled a new, national Covid 19 hit-squad of boffins to lead the mission to find a vaccine and cure.

In total Ā£25million has been revealed to try and find the way out of the crisis. read more

The race is on to develop a vaccine against COVID-19.
At least 70 potential treatments are in development, with three at the clinical stage when human trials begin.
Outside China, the US is the only other country undertaking human testing.
America’s top medical expert Anthony Fauci has said a vaccine could be ready within 12 to 18 months.
But health officials elsewhere say it could take even longer, as others warn against rushing the process.
John Nicholls is the clinical professor of pathology at the University of Hong Kong.
His team was one of the first outside mainland China to reproduce COVID-19 in a laboratory for research.

RMIT Professor Joe Siracusa says if Australian scientists can produce the COVID-19 vaccine ā€œtheyā€™re going to have the billion dollar winner and the prestige of leading the world in scienceā€.

ā€œI think the great issue now is that this should be an international cooperation on how best to get this vaccine and get it around the world,ā€ Mr Siracusa told Sky News.

ā€œThis vaccine is the holy grail.

ā€œAnd we need the cooperation and I think Australia is perfectly poised to do just that.ā€
