B.C. Premier John Horgan announced Wednesday the renewal of a provincial state of emergency as the province continues its efforts to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus.
Horgan said the state of emergency would remain in place “for the foreseeable future.”

The B.C. government also announced it would use a funding windfall of $120 million from the federal government to “decommission, reclaim or restore” more than 2,000 inactive or orphaned wells within British Columbia.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced an investment of $1.7 billion to clean up orphan wells in B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan in April to help keep people working during the COVID-19 pandemic. read more

California Governor Gavin Newsom said Monday that another 42 people died overnight from coronavirus, putting the state’s death toll since the crisis began at over 1,000. Watch his remarks.

Donald Trump and his coronavirus taskforce have unveiled a set of federal guidelines for reopening the economy, which comprise three phases but ultimately defer to governors on when and how to return their states to normal. ‘A prolonged lockdown combined with a forced economic depression would inflict an immense and wide-ranging toll on public health,’ he said. In Trump’s plan, the responsibility for opening businesses across the country lies with state, not federal, authorities. Update: As unemployment reaches record levels in California, Gov. Gavin Newson on April 15 has signed an executive order to extend the hours of the Employment Development Department’s call center to meet the demand. The new hours, seven days a week, will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Newsom said. They start April 20. #coronavirus #COVID19

Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced Tuesday his government would deploy extra resources to long-term care homes battling serious COVID-19 outbreaks, as provincial legislators met to extend a state of emergency declaration for another 28 days.

Ford said he wanted “specialized teams” deployed to these facilities and added that his administration would issue an emergency order declaring that employees of long-term care homes will not be able to work in multiple facilities.

Ford also said Tuesday that schools would not reopen on May 4th, marking the second time the Ontario government has pushed back the date for schools reopening. read more

With more than 13,000 confirmed cases and a death total nearing 500 in Georgia, Gov. Brian Kemp plans to address the public during a media gathering on Monday.

Kemp will be joined by Georgia Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Kathleen Toomey, Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency Director Homer Bryson, and Georgia National Guard Adjutant General Tom Carden.

Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is facing growing calls to declare a state of emergency over the COVID-19 outbreak. The government’s panel of experts says Japan has yet to see a huge surge in coronavirus cases, but hospitals in key cities such as Tokyo and Osaka are already strained. New Brunswick’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Jennifer Russell and Premier Blaine Higgs provided an update on the province’s COVID-19 fight on Wednesday.

Russell confirmed 11 new cases of the novel coronavirus during the briefing, bringing the total number of cases to 81. Russell said the new cases are in the age range of 20’s to 60’s.

Of the 81 cases, 43 are travel-related, 22 are close contacts of confirmed cases, three cases are from community transmission, and 13 cases remain under investigation. read more

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced new hospital space opening Monday and changes to election and tax dates caused by the coronavirus outbreak.

The City of Montreal declared a state of emergency Friday afternoon as the number of cases of COVID-19 jumped to 971, representing 48 per cent of cases in the province.

Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante said the decision was made at the request of Quebec’s public health director Dr. Horacio Arruda.

Earlier in the day, the Quebec government announced 10 more deaths as a result of the novel coronavirus, bringing the total number of fatalities to 18.
