While we have to wait until Sunday to find out how our lockdown will be eased, the process is starting today in Italy – the first European country to bring in restrictions.
Its sleeping economic life – and social life – for that matter have started to stir.
And it is happening in other places too today.
In Spain, small shops are able to reopen, including hairdressers – wouldn’t that be lovely – bookshops, florists and takeaways.
In Portugal too small shops can open again and people are allowed to travel on public transport so long as they wear masks.
COVID-19 is a “gray rhino” rather than “black swan” event for Europe. It had the opportunity to learn from China’s experience, but the ingrained thinking that whatever China does is wrong has cost dearly.

Trials for a new COVID-19 vaccine began on humans at Oxford University in the UK on Thursday.
Two volunteers took part part in the trials with one given the new vaccine and another given a ‘control’ which will not prevent the virus.
The global pandemic has sickened nearly 2,68 million people, killed more than 187,000 worldwide, crippled economies and forced restrictions on the movement of millions of people in an effort to stop the virus from spreading further and overwhelming health care systems.
Many new cases are springing up in areas where the virus was thought to be under control.
South Korea and China are reporting a promising drop in novel coronavirus cases, while the virus’ grip on Europe continues to grow. What lessons can the U.S. learn from these countries?
