Coronavirus update: The UK COVID-19 death toll today passed 16,000 as fatalities increased by 596.

Health authorities confirmed 16,060 people had died in hospitals across the country in 24 hours as covid 19 infections rose by 5,850 to 120,067.

Ministers tonight refused to give a date for schools returning, and shot down claims it could be in just three weeks time.

Gavin Williamson said “I can’t give a date” for relaxing any measures yet until the Government’s five key tests are met. read more

Gavin Williamson, the Education Secretary, said that in normal times, children would be starting their school terms, adding, “but’these are not normal times.”

Speaking at the daily press briefing, he thanked the UK for the sacrifices everyone has made, saying “this has not been easy.”

COVID-19 update – President Donald Trump said China is “way ahead of US” in Coronavirus death toll at the US taskforce daily briefing.

He said: “We’re not number one, China is number one.

“China is number one by a lot. It’s not even close.

“They are way ahead of us in terms of deaths.

“You know it. I know it. They know it.

“But you don’t want to report it. Why? You’ll have to explain that.”

When being questioned about the repercussions for who started the coronavirus outbreak, Trump said: “If they (China) were knowingly responsible then yes there should be consequences…” read more

The Chinese city of Wuhan, where the coronavirus originated last year, has raised its official Covid-19 death toll by 50%, adding 1,290 fatalities.

Wuhan officials attributed the new figure to updated reporting and deaths outside hospitals. China has insisted there was no cover-up.

It has been accused of downplaying the severity of its virus outbreak.

Wuhan’s 11 million residents spent months in strict lockdown conditions, which have only recently been eased.

The latest official figures bring the death toll in the city in China’s central Hubei province to 3,869, increasing the national total to more than 4,600. read more

Coronavirus update – The UK’s search for a COVID-19 vaccine will be turbocharged with a multi-million pound coronavirus funding boost, Business Secretary Alok Sharma said tonight.

Ministers last night unveiled a further 21 projects which will get a slice of a £14million to help find a way out of the deadly pandemic, but it will still take many months to develop.

And they unveiled a new, national Covid 19 hit-squad of boffins to lead the mission to find a vaccine and cure.

In total £25million has been revealed to try and find the way out of the crisis. read more

At his daily news briefing, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo was asked about a remark by President Trump that questioned the way New York City was reporting “probable” coronavirus deaths. Cuomo said the numbers were accurate and in line with CDC requirements. Watch his remarks.

The US has become the first country in the world to record more than 2,000 coronavirus deaths in a single day.

Figures from Johns Hopkins University show 2,108 people died in the past 24 hours while there are now more than half a million confirmed infections.

The US could soon surpass Italy as the country with the most coronavirus deaths worldwide.

But experts on the White House Covid-19 task force say the outbreak is starting to level off across the US.

Dr Deborah Birx said there were good signs the outbreak was stabilising, but cautioned: “As encouraging as they are, we have not reached the peak.” read more

Malaysia recorded 170 new Covid-19 cases on Tuesday (Apr 7), taking the total number of confirmed infections in the country to 3,963 cases.
The country also reported one new death, bringing the Covid-19 death toll to 63.

This translates to a fatality rate of less than 2% out of the total number of cases, Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said at the ministry’s daily Covid-19 briefing.

In terms of recoveries, Malaysia discharged 80 more patients as of 12pm on Tuesday.

So far, 1,321 patients have recovered from Covid-19 in Malaysia since the outbreak began. read more
