As many countries ease their lockdowns, Brazil has emerged as the new epicentre of the coronavirus crisis.

On Thursday, Brazil saw the death toll rise by more than 1,000 for the third consecutive day, taking it beyond 26,000.

And in a country ravaged by the virus, nowhere is suffering more than Sao Paulo where massed graves are being dug in cemeteries for rising numbers of virus dead.

The daily coronavirus death toll in the UK has risen by 118 to reach a total of 36,793, Boris Johnson announced on Sunday.

Weekend death tolls tend to be lower, due to delays in data collection.

As of 5pm on Saturday, nearly 37,800 people have died in hospitals, care homes and the wider community after testing positive for Covid-19 in the UK.

Some of the most disadvantaged parts of the UK are suffering the worst effects of the coronavirus pandemic. The borough of Newham in east London has recorded the worst mortality rate in England and Wales, according to official figures.

Meanwhile the continent of Africa has yet to suffer the numbers of infections and deaths that have been seen in other parts of the world. The latest figures show just under 3,000 deaths across the whole of Africa from coronavirus.

And while many deaths may have gone unreported and numbers could rise, it’s been suggested that much can be learnt from the way African countries prepared for the virus. read more

Saskatchewan’s chief medical health officer Dr. Saqib Shahab reported the seventh death related to COVID-19 in the province during Wednesday’s briefing.

He said “this reminds us that COVID-19 is very much in Saskatchewan,” and called on all residents to continue practice physical distancing as businesses reopen across the province.

Shahab also reported 21 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of cases to 620 in Saskatchewan.

Saskatchewan Health Authority’s (SHA) chief executive officer Scott Livingstone said that the SHA has slowly began resuming some of the everyday healthcare services to the public, including primary healthcare visits for chronic diseases, mental health services, kidney health and immunizations. read more

Malaysia reported 31 more Covid-19 cases on Wednesday (May 20), bringing the country’s total number of infections to 7,009.

Sixty more patients have been discharged, which means 5,706 patients have recovered from Covid-19 in Malaysia since the outbreak began.

The UK’s daily figure for coronavirus deaths has dropped to 170 – the lowest since the day after lockdown began read more

British Columbia’s provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry provided an update on Saturday regarding the province’s ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Henry reported 21 new cases of the virus, bringing the total number to 2,428. She also announced one new death, bringing the total number of lives lost to 141 in the province.

Henry also confirmed an outbreak at Abbotsford Regional Hosptial’s intensive care unit, where six staff and two patients contracted COVID-19.

The province’s top doctor asked residents to “pause” during the May long weekend, stay close to home and “think through” how to put in place their own plan for safe social interactions in the coming weeks. read more

The latest developments in the coronavirus pandemic:
– The Johns Hopkins university says the global death toll has topped 300,000. There are more than 4.4 million confirmed cases worldwide.
– South Sudan has registered its first death from the coronavirus.
– Slovenia has called an official end to its pandemic – becoming the first European country to do so.
– After a two-month shutdown, restaurants, cafes and bars are reopening in Australia’s most populous state, New South Wales.
– People in central Bolivia in South America have defied shutdown orders to protest against coronavirus restrictions. The country’s been under lockdown since mid-March and many residents want it relaxed. They’re calling on authorities to provide more water and food. There have been over 3,000 COVID-19 cases reported in Bolivia, and around 140 deaths. read more

British Columbia’s provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix gave an update on the latest COVID-19 cases in the province on Wednesday, and discussed the provincial government’s ongoing response to the pandemic.

British Columbia has reported one new death from COVID-19 and 16 new cases of the virus. Henry said more than 78 per cent of B.C.’s 2,376 COVID-19 cases had fully recovered. The province’s death toll from the pandemic now stands at 132.

The number of people in hospital had fallen by four to 59 patients, she said. Just 14 of those remain in intensive care. read more

Alberta reported 45 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday and 1 new death, bringing the death toll in the province to 118.

The province’s chief medical officer Dr. Deena Hinshaw said during a daily briefing about Alberta’s response to the pandemic that 4,866 people have recovered. There are currently 1,361 active cases.

Hinshaw said 73 cases have resulted in hospitalization and 12 people are in intensive care.
She also addressed questions about the province’s relaunch strategy, and said a decision about whether the province would push forward with Stage 1 of the relaunch on Thursday would be made during a meeting of the emergency management cabinet committee. A decision on that front would be announced on Wednesday. read more

British Columbia reported one new death from COVID-19 over the weekend and 23 additional cases, bringing the total to 2,353.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix confirmed the latest numbers on Monday and spoke about efforts to slowly start reopening the economy.

Dr. Henry asked for patience as the province moves toward easing physical distancing requirements after the May long weekend, comparing B.C.’s reopening plan to a “steady stream” that is “far more successful than a rushing river that can damage things in its place.” read more
