Outdoor markets and car showrooms across England can reopen from 1 June and all other non-essential retail, including high street shops, department stores and shopping centres, from 15 June “once they are Covid-19 secure and can show customers will be kept safe”, prime minister Boris Johnson has said.

Speaking at the daily 10 Downing Street coronavirus briefing, the prime minister said the moves were “careful and deliberate steps on the road to rebuilding our country” and would be dependent on meeting the government’s five tests for getting control over the disease. read more

World Health Organization (WHO) officials have warned that the first wave of the coronavirus outbreak could include a second peak.

It warned countries – even those that had successfully suppressed the virus and are relaxing restrictions put in place to combat the disease it causes – to remain “on high alert”.

“We may get a second peak in this wave. This happened during pandemics in the past,”

Dr Michael Ryan, WHO’s emergencies chief, told reporters in Geneva on Monday. read more

The prime minister has set out plans for shops and some other businesses to reopen in England.

Outdoor markets and car showrooms will be able to open from June 1st if it’s safe to do so, with most shops following suit on June 15th.

As the lockdown in England starts to be relaxed, more people will be using public transport and returning to work. With the changes come new challenges and potential risks of infection from coronavirus.

Former vice president and Democratic presumptive presidential nominee Joe Biden made his first known public appearance outside his Delaware home in almost two months on Monday to mark the U.S. Memorial Day with a trip to a nearby veteran’s memorial.

Biden along with his wife Jill, both wore black masks and laid a wreath of white roses at the memorial for Second World War and Korean War veterans. He then spoke with veterans, who were also wearing masks, before departing.

The former vice president has been holding campaign events from his home since COVID-19 forced much of the country to stay home. read more

British Columbia’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Bonnie Henry and the province’s Minister of Health Adrian Dix provided a briefing on Monday to talk about the province’s ongoing efforts to fight COVID-19.

Dr. Henry reported that there are 12 new COVID-19 cases since Saturday and four new deaths, bringing B.C.’s COVID-19 death toll to 161. All four deaths were linked to the Langley Lodge long-term care facility.

There are 267 active cases in the province, with 37 people in hospitals and seven in ICU, read more

Boris Johnson is leading the government’s daily coronavirus briefing for the second consecutive day.

It comes less than an hour after his top aide, Dominic Cummings, moved to justify his actions for travelling to Durham during the Covid-19 lockdown in a statement made on Monday, saying he does not regret his decision.

The government adviser has come under increasing pressure to resign due to his actions but will be staying on.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and director of Public Health England Yvonne Doyle provided an update on the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic on Monday.

During the briefing, Johnson unveiled the nation’s retail reopening plan as restrictions begin to loosen amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Starting June 1, outdoor markets will be allowed to operate, subject to all premises being made “COVID secure” as the transmission of the coronavirus is lower outdoors, Johnson said. The prime minister also announced that starting June 15, the British government will allow more non-essential retail to reopen. read more

Boris Johnson holds the government’s daily coronavirus press briefing amid mounting controversy over his top aide’s 260-mile trip to Durham during lockdown

Boris Johnson has restated his determination for a phased reopening of schools in England, before the summer holidays. They were closed on March 20th, to all except key worker’s children and vulnerable students.

The Prime Minister said primary schools will reopen on June 1st, to early years pupils, Reception, Year 1 and Year 6, though that may not be possible in all cases.

From June 15th, Mr Johnson said secondary schools would provide “some contact” to year 10 and 12 students, to allow them to begin preparations for exams next year. read more

Government officials give updates on Monday, May 25, on the various levels of community quarantine enforced in the Philippines due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak

The daily coronavirus death toll in the UK has risen by 118 to reach a total of 36,793, Boris Johnson announced on Sunday.

Weekend death tolls tend to be lower, due to delays in data collection.

As of 5pm on Saturday, nearly 37,800 people have died in hospitals, care homes and the wider community after testing positive for Covid-19 in the UK.
