Californians report a sizable Fourth of July earthquake
The USGS reports a preliminary magnitude of 6.4 for the earthquake centered near Ridgecrest, California. Some people in parts of California and Nevada say it’s the strongest they’ve felt in some time.
The strongest earthquake to hit Southern California in nearly 20 years left scattered damage Thursday morning and was felt from Las Vegas to Orange County, the US Geological Survey reported.
The quake, with a magnitude of 6.4, was centered near Ridgecrest, a community west of the Mojave Desert and about 150 miles north of Los Angeles.
At least 159 aftershocks of magnitude 2.5 or greater were recorded after the earthquake, according to USGS Seismologist Robert Graves. The largest of them were magnitude 4.6.
Lucy Jones of the USGS called it a “robust” series and said there is a 50% chance of another large quake in the next week.
As Ridgecrest Mayor Peggy Breeden spoke to CNN on Thursday afternoon, an aftershock interrupted the interview.

Based on Peter Benchley’s best-selling novel, Steven Spielberg’s 1975 shark saga set the standard for the New Hollywood popcorn blockbuster while frightening millions of moviegoers out of the water. One early summer night on fictional Atlantic resort Amity Island, Chrissie decides to take a moonlight skinny dip while her friends party on the beach. Yanked suddenly below the ocean surface, she never returns. When pieces of her wash ashore, Police Chief Brody (Roy Scheider) suspects the worst, but Mayor Vaughn (Murray Hamilton), mindful of the lucrative tourist trade and the approaching July 4th holiday, refuses to put the island on a business-killing shark alert. After the shark dines on a few more victims, the Mayor orders the local fishermen to catch the culprit. Anyone can become a YouTuber. You just need to be aware of what it takes. You might not have all the skills and knowledge today, but it is a hobby or possible profession you can learn by doing, which is half the fun. It is supposed to be a creative process after all. In the next video, I will actually answer a few frequently asked questions from beginners. 🙂
