Quebec officials responded Wednesday to a military report which raised serious concerns as to how long-term care homes are being operated in the province.

Premier François Legault said the 60-page report did “not have a lot of surprises” about the state of nursing homes, known as CHSLDs, amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Legault said the long-term care home sector in the province has been unable to fill about 10,000 positions for years now.

“The situation remains difficult,” he said, noting facilities desperately need more workers. read more

Premier Doug Ford said Wednesday that the Ontario government will take over five more long-term care homes around the Greater Toronto Area amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The announcement came after a startling report from the Canadian military was released Tuesday outlining multiple issues in homes across the province.

The report said military members observed cockroach infestations, aggressive feeding that caused choking, bleeding infections, and residents crying for help for hours.

When asked if Ford would either fire or ask for the resignation of Minister of Long-Term Care Merrilee Fullerton, the premier refused and defended his minister. read more

Ontario Premier Doug Ford provided an update on Wednesday regarding the province’s efforts to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus. The premier was joined by Dr. Merrilee Fullerton, Minister of Long-Term Care, and Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health.

Ford announced enhanced safety measures for long-term care facilities due to the high-risk seniors face of contracting COVID-19. The new plan entails that long-term care homes in the province facing novel coronavirus outbreaks will be targeted for testing and surveillance, the staff who work at these facilities will have expanded education on infection prevention and control, and the priority when it comes to personal protective equipment distribution will go toward long-term care facilities – in addition to other measures the Ford government hopes will ease the strain on these facilities. read more
