New York Governor Andrew Cuomo provided an update Monday regarding the continued efforts his state is making to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Cuomo said that although the number of daily deaths caused by the virus in the state is decreasing, it is flattening at a “horrific level.” He added that having over 650 deaths occur during the Easter holiday was “especially tragic,” as the death toll surpassed 10,000 in New York State on Monday.

Cuomo also stated that they will “listen to the experts and follow the data” before choosing to reopen the state amid the pandemic, and outlined a potential objective for reopening, which included re-calibrating essential workers and applying more testing.

Although the number of cases is increasing, he said the state is effectively controlling the spread of COVID-19 and that “the worst is over” if they “continue to be smart going forward.” Cuomo said they need to be careful not to “turn the valve too fast” by reducing self-isolation measures because they could see the number of cases “jump right back" again.
