Chinese scientists working on a COVID-19 vaccine have told Sky News they are “99%” sure it will be effective.
Sinovac, a Beijing-based biotech company, currently has its coronavirus vaccine in stage 2 trials, with more than 1,000 volunteers participating.

Brits in England are now officially being encouraged, if they cannot work from home, to return to their jobs.
The government hopes to kickstart the economy after seven weeks of lockdown while keeping the coronavirus at bay through social distancing in workplaces and public transport.
Today workers were given the green light to head out of lockdown if they couldn’t do their job from home – with thousands cramming onto public transport during rush hour.
While Brits were urged not to use buses and trains unless they absolutely have to, worrying pictures show people packed onto busy Tubes.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has today outlined a detailed plan for the UK to exit the draconian and economically-crippling lockdown in place since March 23.
The 50-page document follows a speech to the nation aired last night in which the PM announced a five-tier virus threat alert system, told those who couldn’t work from home to return to their jobs and extended Brits’ permitted outdoor time to unlimited exercise and some public leisure activities.

Pence is reevaluating how he will be interacting with others after his press secretary tested positive for COVID-19. In his latest television addresss announcing gradual easing of the lockdown, the Prime Minister has encouraged people to return to work, if they can’t work from home.
The government has said it is working with employers to establish guidance about making the workplace safe.
Boris Johnson also said that primary schools in England could partially reopen in June. There are no plans for a full return of secondary schools before September.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps promised more cycle lanes, wider pavements and extra charging points for electric vehicles as part of a £2bn package to allow people to travel without using public transport.
In the daily coronavirus briefing, he said that even if public transport reverts back to its regular service, with social distancing in place there would only be space for 10% of passengers.
He said encouraging people to cycle and walk to work will be a key part of easing the lockdown.

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday that the world must work hard to prepare for the next pandemic while responding to the current COVID-19 crisis, adding that it’s an opportunity to build resilient health systems around the world which can withstand any potential future pandemics.
Dr. Tedros said that WHO, UNICEF and the International Federation of the Red Cross have published a guide for countries on how to maintain community-based healthcare systems in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson addressed the nation outside Downing Street for the first time since being hospitalized with COVID-19.
More than 20,000 people have now died in hospital in the UK after becoming infected with coronavirus. The government described it as “a tragic and terrible milestone”.
The number doesn’t included deaths in care homes or the community in England and Northern Ireland.
Previously the government’s chief scientific adviser had said that keeping deaths below 20,000 would be “a good outcome”.
Meanwhile Downing Street has announced that the Prime Minister Boris Johnson will return to work on Monday. It’s three weeks since he was admitted to intensive care suffering from the coronavirus infection.
A new, unpublished study found that hydroxychloroquine, a drug President Trump has cited as key in fighting coronavirus, has a higher death rate among coronavirus patients compared to those not on the drug.
In the fight against the coronavirus, there is still one big unknown: how many people have actually contracted it, maybe even without showing any symptoms? One way to answer this question is through antibody tests. An antibody is a protective protein produced by the immune system to destroy harmful viruses and infections. When a pathogen enters the body, the immune system recognizes it and produces antibodies that dock onto the pathogen’s antigens to remove them. Later a blood test can be used to detect these antibodies in a person’s blood stream. Antibodies are also used in vaccines to make people immune to future infections. But immunity doesn’t last a lifetime in all cases. So what do we know about Sars-CoV-2? How long will people be immune after an infection?
