Ontario Education Minister Stephen Lecce announced on Sunday that all publicly-funded schools in the province will remain closed until at least May 31 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, an extension of the previous order. The provincial government made the decision to extend the closures based on advice from Ontario’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. David Williams, and the command table. Lecce indicated May 29 in the media briefing, as May 30 and 31 fall on a weekend. Lecce clarified that all private schools and daycare centres will also remain closed, but those are managed under the province’s emergency order. The education minister also said that Ontario is working on building a “strong” summer learning program and that all PA days, also known as professional activity days, for the remainder of the school year will be cancelled. B.C. health officials say measures put in place to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus are working, but restrictions won’t be lifted until the middle of May at the earliest. Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says officials are looking at a re-opening of the health-care system in May as a first step, but a huge number of barriers still need to be cleared. “For the health-care system to start ramping up again — outpatient visits, surgeries, diagnosis test increases … these things need to happen in tandem. But we need to do it in a way that does not increase risk of people coming together, spreading the virus and transmitting it,” Henry said. The province released another set of complex modelling data on Friday that suggests B.C. is flattening the curve when it comes to confirmed COVID-19 cases and is well ahead of the Canadian average.
