Ontario Premier Doug Ford is expected to make an announcement and discuss the province’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic on Monday.
Ford announced on Friday that the province would allow a small, select number of businesses to reopen on May 4.
They would include seasonal businesses such as garden centres and nurseries with curbside pick-up and delivery only, as well as lawn care and landscaping services. Also included are automatic and self-serve car washes, and auto dealerships by appointment only.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will provide a briefing on Sunday from Ottawa. Federal ministers and officials will speak shortly after the prime minister.
With clear evidence of the pandemic curve flattening in Canada, some provinces have already begun relaxing certain lockdown restrictions, with others, including hardest hit Ontario and Quebec, set to do so on Monday.
All are taking a cautious approach, maintaining physical distancing rules as the steps for reopening for business are phased in over weeks or months to try to guard against a second wave of infections.

“At the right time, we will certainly do a comprehensive review of this (COVID-19) pandemic and our response, and seek to learn from it,” said Minister Lawrence Wong in a news conference on Saturday (May 2). “I have no doubt that we will find many things which we could have done better, and many changes which should be made in order for us to be better prepared the next time. That is our overall attitude to always seek to learn,” said Mr Wong.

Toronto Mayor John Tory will be joined by Toronto’s medical officer of health Dr. Eileen de Villa and Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg to provide an update on Toronto’s COVID-19 cases and City’s response to the pandemic on Wednesday.
Tory announced on Tuesday the city has been able to co-ordinate free temporary internet access for many vulnerable Torontonians during the pandemic, including residents in lower-income neighbourhoods, seniors in long-term care homes and clients in many city-operated shelters in partnership with technology and telecommunication companies.
The Home Secretary is facing questions over the handling of the coronavirus outbreak in the UK by the Home Office.
