Premier Doug Ford was joined by Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, and Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education, on Tuesday where it was announced that Ontario schools will not be reopening for the rest of the school year. However, online learning will continue. “I’m just not going to risk it,” Ford said of not reopening schools. Premier Ford also announced that overnight camps will be closed this summer, but day camps will be allowed to reopen with strict public health measures in place in July and August. The update comes as the province starts the first stage of its economic reopening today, giving the green light to retailers, some sports centres, vehicle dealerships and other businesses to resume. The government has rejected suggestions that children could return to school in England in the next few weeks. The Education Secretary, Gavin Williamson, declined to give a date for them to reopen, saying the government’s tests would need to be met before pupils could return to school as part of any easing of coronavirus restrictions. Meanwhile ministers remains under intense pressure over shortages of protective clothing for health workers and especially the medical gowns used in hospital intensive care wards. Dr. Brent Roussin, Manitoba’s chief provincial public health officer, and Lanette Siragusa, chief nursing officer for Manitoba Shared Health held the daily coronavirus briefing on Saturday. Dr. Roussin announced 13 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of cases in the province to 243. The number of deaths remains at four. Dr. Roussin said that eight individuals are hospitalized, five of them in intensive care as of Saturday morning. He also said that the province is listing 96 individuals as recovered, leaving 143 as currently active cases. Over 16,000 COVID-19 tests have been performed so far in Manitoba.
