Ontario Premier Doug Ford urged residents to continue to follow physical distancing guidelines and to wear non-medical face masks when social distancing is not possible, a day after the province entered Phase 1 of its reopening plan.
The premier was joined by Deputy Premier and Health Minister Christine Elliott and Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney for a daily briefing Wednesday on the province’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.
In addition, Mulroney said the province is recommending anyone travelling by public transportation to wear a face covering, except those who are under the age of two, has trouble breathing or is unable to remove a mask without assistance.

The federal government has suspended shipments of N95 masks from a Montreal-based supplier after about eight million masks made in China failed to meet specifications.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, as well as the country’s chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam, and Minister of Indigenous Services Marc Miller, explained the government’s decision to suspend the shipment of N95 masks.
Trudeau said bluntly that Canada will not be paying for N95 masks which do not meet the required specifications from Public Health Canada.

Berlin’s city government has accused the US of ‘an act of modern day piracy’ after a shipment of 200,000 protective face masks was hijacked on its way from China to Germany. The masks had been ordered by Berlin’s police force from an American manufacturer producing in China. But, according to Berlin authorities, they were confiscated in Bangkok and diverted to the US. As the coronavirus pandemic worsens, demand for crucial medical supplies, such as masks and respirators, has surged worldwide, leading to unprecedented buying practices and countries outbidding each other. New York state had its largest single-day death toll in the pandemic so far. The state now accounts for nearly half of all virus-related fatalities in the country. As hospitals continue to face critical shortages of medical equipment, New York’s governor, Andrew Cuomo, has issued an executive order to seize critically-needed supplies across the state and bring them to where they’re needed most.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canada is not looking at retaliatory measures after U.S. President Donald Trump told a manufacturer of medical masks not to export them to Canada. Trudeau said he would be speaking with Trump in the coming days and looking for a positive solution on the issue.
Chief political correspondent David Akin and Ottawa bureau chief Mercedes Stephenson break down Trudeau’s comments and what the next steps may be with the United States.
They also look into the lack of modelling projections being provided by the prime minister Trudeau and the federal government.
Deputy chief medical officer Paul Kelly holds a press conference to update on Australia’s coronavirus situation.
There are 5,544 cases in Australia at the moment, and there have been 30 deaths. But Professor Kelly says there is good news with lower daily increases in confirmed cases than a week ago.
