A quake with a magnitude of 7.1 jolted much of California, cracking buildings, setting fires, breaking roads and causing several injuries while seismologists warned that large aftershocks were expected to continue for days, if not weeks.

The Friday night quake — preceded by Thursday’s 6.4-magnitude temblor in the Mojave Desert — was the largest Southern California quake in at least 20 years and was followed by a series of large and small aftershocks, including a few above magnitude 5.0.

A magnitude 6.4 earthquake rocked southern California Thursday morning, centered near the desert community of Ridgecrest, 180 kilometers northeast of Los Angeles. Mike O’Sullivan reports that some people suffered minor injuries, and aftershocks continue to shake the region.

A magnitude 6-4 earthquake was felt throughout the Southern California Thursday, shaking up local residents celebrating the Fourth of July. The quake, which began at 10:35 a.m., was centered about 7 miles southwest of Searles Valley, a sparsely populated part of the Mojave Desert in northwestern San Bernardino County, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The Los Angeles Fire Department says a magnitude-5.4 aftershock struck Southern California shortly after 4 a.m. local time Friday morning. A 7.1 magnitude earthquake has struck Southern California, the biggest tremor to recorded in 20 years.

News anchors Sara Donchey and Juan Fernandez were live on the air for CBS’ evening newscast when the quake hit.

It struck at the shallow depth of 0.9km and its epicentre was near the city of Ridgecrest, about 240km north-east of Los Angeles.

Mobile phone footage shows “The Big Apple Coaster” at the New York-New York hotel in Las Vegas shaking with the tremor.

A 6.4-magnitude quake hit the same area on Thursday at a depth of nearly 11km. read more

A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck southern California Friday night, just one day after a 6.4 quake struck in the same area. CBS News’ Jonathan Vigliotti reports from Los Angeles.

A magnitude 6.9 earthquake jolted Southern California and was felt as far away as Mexico Friday night, but no major damage was reported.

The quake, which initially was reported as magnitude 7.1, would be the largest temblor in the region in 20 years and was centered in the same area as a 6.4 quake that hit a day earlier.

The shaker at 8:19 p.m. was centered 11 miles from Ridgecrest, a Mojave Desert town 150 miles (240 kilometers) away from Los Angeles that saw building damage, fires and several injuries from the earlier quake. read more

Southern California is awaiting more aftershocks after two powerful earthquakes rocked the area this week. The 7.1 magnitude quake, which hit just after 8 p.m. local time, was felt from Los Angeles all the way to Nevada and caused injuries, sparked fires and closed roadways. An earthquake with an early measure of magnitude 6.4 hit Southern California, about 150 miles north Los Angeles near Ridgecrest, California, according to the US Geological Survey.
At least four large aftershocks have been recorded, measuring 4.7, 3.5, 3.8 and 4.2 magnitude, officials said.
The quake was felt in central Los Angeles as a long, rolling quake, making buildings rock back and forth for at least several seconds.
