The Government is rejecting calls to relax the coronavirus lockdown, saying the outbreak remains at a “delicate and dangerous” stage. Ministers are asking people to adjust to what they’re calling “a new normal,” for some time yet.

As the Prime Minister Boris Johnson returns to work, the government says the current restrictions are having a positive effect, with fewer people being treated in hospital.

There remains concern among care providers about testing for staff and residents in care homes in England. The BBC has spoken to more than 200 providers, and three quarters say none of their staff has been screened. read more

A person driving a luxury sports car in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore was punished. Sanskar Daryani was not wearing a mask while driving his convertible Porsche 718 Boxster. He was stopped on the street and made to do sit-ups. Speaking on the incident later, Daryani claimed that he had the requisite documents to venture out of his home. Madhya Pradesh has recorded over 2,000 cases of Covid-19 so far, and over 90 deaths.

Acting PM Dominic Raab refused to discuss the ‘next stage’ of the lockdown when he spoke to Sophy Ridge.

But he stressed Britain was facing a new normal with no sudden return to the life we previously had.

Around 200 demonstrators gathered in Berlin on Saturday to protest against COVID-19 measures, arguing with police officers that their constitutional rights had been infringed.

According to Berlin’s police spokesperson, about 180 officers were in place to uphold containment regulations as health authorities had not given permission for the gathering to take place.

Germany’s confirmed COVID-19 cases had increased by 2,055 to a new total of 152,438, data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases showed on Saturday, which is a second day of deceleration after three days of acceleration in new infections. read more

Protesters gather in their cars for a rally against the Virginia lockdown to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Since last week, thousands of demonstrators — in more than a dozen states — took to the streets to demand stay-at-home orders be lifted.

But public health officials have warned that lifting restrictions too early could lead to a spike in cases.

Trump has since excused the actions of the protesters, some of whom waving Nazi flags, declaring: “They’ve got cabin fever and they want their lives back.” read more

Three states – Telangana, Punjab and Delhi – decided on Sunday not to ease the lockdown restrictions in line with the Centre’s guidelines to gradually reopen the country and reboot the economy starting Monday.

While Delhi and Punjab governments said there will be no relaxations till the lockdown ends on May 3, the K Chandrasekhar Rao government in Telangana decided to extend the complete lockdown in the state till May 7.

The Kerala government announced relaxation of COVID-19 lockdown restrictions in two zones, allowing among others private vehicles movement in an odd-even basis and dine-in services at hotels from Monday. State police chief Loknath Behera said the relaxations of restrictions imposed would come into effect in the Green and Orange-B zones in the state from Monday,an official release said. Earlier, the Left government had colour-coded 14 districts of the state into four zones– Red, Green, Orange-A and Orange-B, for containing the Covid-19 pandemic. Red zone comprises Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode and Malappuram districts. read more

President Trump called protesters demanding an end to the lockdown “responsible people” – hours after encouraging demonstrations in Michigan, Minnesota and Virginia.

Trump had earlier called for the “liberation” of the Democrat-run states in a series of incendiary tweets. The president admitted Thursday it was up to governors to reopen their states amid the COVID-19 pandemic, claiming 29 were close to ending their lockdowns.

Asked about the protesters Friday, Trump said: “These are people expressing their views. They seem to be very responsible people […] they’ve been treated a little bit rough.” read more

B.C. health officials say measures put in place to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus are working, but restrictions won’t be lifted until the middle of May at the earliest.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says officials are looking at a re-opening of the health-care system in May as a first step, but a huge number of barriers still need to be cleared.

“For the health-care system to start ramping up again — outpatient visits, surgeries, diagnosis test increases … these things need to happen in tandem. But we need to do it in a way that does not increase risk of people coming together, spreading the virus and transmitting it,” Henry said. read more
