The scenes inside overcrowded ICU wards in northern Italy in March were both shocking and signficant – the first vision that the full impact of coronavirus was being unleashed in Europe.

The worst affected place was Bergamo. It was overwhelmed first by the virus, then by death, then grief.

Now the worst is over, there is a sense, among bereft families, of anger – that Italy’s lockdown didn’t start soon enough.

One positive effect of the coronavirus pandemic has been on the environment. It’s led to the biggest ever reduction in the volume of carbon dioxide released into the world’s atmosphere.

At the height of the lockdown scientists say that daily emissions around the world dropped by almost a fifth. The biggest fall was in China, while in the UK carbon dioxide output was reduced by 13 per cent. But scientists are warning that the cuts in greenhouse gases are likely to be temporary.

Meanwhile in the United States, President Trump has been strongly criticised by health experts, after stating that he was taking an anti-malarial drug to protect himself against coronavirus. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has today outlined a detailed plan for the UK to exit the draconian and economically-crippling lockdown in place since March 23.

But, will the government’s exhaustive plan to get Britain back up and running work? read more

If the coronavirus pandemic is seen as a marathon race, where along the road is Australia currently placed? Halfway? Is the finish line in sight? On 60 MINUTES, Tom Steinfort reveals the stark truth that we haven’t even begun to raise a sweat. Epidemiologists say we’re only about a kilometre into this 42-kilometre test of endurance. It means, despite Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s understandable bullishness, all the talk of easing lockdown restrictions needs to be considered very carefully. For all our good work so far, complacency about the threat of the virus could lead to many more deaths, and a second wave of COVID-19 in Australia, especially in winter, might easily turn into a wipe-out. read more

U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson unveiled new coronavirus lockdown rules in England, including a controversial “stay alert” slogan. His approach is on par with other European countries, like Italy or Spain. Elizabeth Palmer reports.

The prime minister has outlined measures to start a gradual easing of the lockdown in England, while warning of the danger of a second surge of the pandemic. In a television address Boris Johnson said it was the right time to “update” the government’s message in England, from “stay at home” to “stay alert”.

But Labour warned that the new message lacked clarity. And the “stay at home” message is not being changed in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.

The Prime Minister’s plan urges anyone who can’t work from home to return to work, but to avoid using public transport if possible. read more

Boris Johnson has set out his “conditional plan” to ease the coronavirus lockdown, lifting restrictions on exercise and work.

In a pre-recorded address to the nation, the Prime Minister said the government wants to “encourage people to take more and even unlimited amounts of outdoor exercise” – provided they stick to social distancing guidelines and stay two metres apart.

And in a bid to kickstart the economy, Mr Johnson said anyone who cannot work from home – such as those in construction and manufacturing – should be “actively encouraged” to go to work from Monday. read more
