Coronavirus update: The UK COVID-19 death toll today passed 16,000 as fatalities increased by 596.

Health authorities confirmed 16,060 people had died in hospitals across the country in 24 hours as covid 19 infections rose by 5,850 to 120,067.

Ministers tonight refused to give a date for schools returning, and shot down claims it could be in just three weeks time.

Gavin Williamson said “I can’t give a date” for relaxing any measures yet until the Government’s five key tests are met. read more

Coronavirus update – The UK’s search for a COVID-19 vaccine will be turbocharged with a multi-million pound coronavirus funding boost, Business Secretary Alok Sharma said tonight.

Ministers last night unveiled a further 21 projects which will get a slice of a £14million to help find a way out of the deadly pandemic, but it will still take many months to develop.

And they unveiled a new, national Covid 19 hit-squad of boffins to lead the mission to find a vaccine and cure.

In total £25million has been revealed to try and find the way out of the crisis. read more

Speaking to reporters outside Rideau Cottage in Ottawa on Thursday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said even under the best-case projections released earlier in the day by his government, it’s likely the “first wave” of COVID-19 peak infection will likely not end until the summer.

“Normality, as it was before, will not come back full-on until we get a vaccine for this… That will be a very long way off,” the prime minister said.

Trudeau said well after the initial peak of COVID-19 infection rates has passed in Canada, Canadians should expect “wavelets” of COVID-19 infections to keep popping back up until a reliable vaccination is developed. read more

Quebec Premier François Legault and health officials provided an update on the ongoing provincial response to COVID-19.

On Wednesday, Quebec’s public health officials released projections that the province could see between 1,263 and 8,860 deaths by the end of April because of the novel coronavirus pandemic even amid sweeping measures aimed at curbing the spread of the virus.

Quebec Premier François Legault and health officials are set to provide an update on the ongoing provincial response on Tuesday.

Quebec announced new funding on Monday to help businesses retrain their employees during the pandemic in new skills, with the government committing $100 million to the initiative. It would see the province cover as much as 100 per cent of salaries and expenses.

The announcement came as the province saw 27 new deaths and 636 new confirmed cases from Sunday.

Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister and health Minister Cameron Friesen will make announcement in relation to the province’s efforts to curb the COVID-19 outbreak.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford will be joined by Deputy Premier and minister of health Christine Elliott, Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, and Rod Phillips, Minister of Finance, to make an announcement on COVID-19 response in the province.

On Tuesday, Ford announced that publicly-funded schools would remain closed until at least May 1 for teachers and May 4 for students. Private schools and child care centre closures have also been extended for two weeks, with Education Minister Stephen Lecce explaining the shorter closure for these institutions is because they fall under the province’s emergency order, extended to mid-April, as opposed to the Education Act. read more

On Monday, Premier Legault announced three new deaths due to COVID-19 in Quebec, bringing the total number of deaths in the province to 25.

He also announced 590 new cases of COVID-19, with a total of 3,430 province-wide.

Premier Legault also stressed to Quebecers to reach out and seek mental health assistance if they feel they need it during these times of self-isolation and social distancing. read more

Amid apprehensions of substantial spread of COVID-19 after a religions congregation in Nizamuddin in the national capital left many infected with the virus, the Health Ministry on Tuesday said it was not the time to find faults but to take action. The Delhi Police has cordoned off a major area in Nizamuddin West here where many people showed symptoms of coronavirus after taking part in the Tabligh-e-Jamaat held earlier this month that was attended by over 2,000 people. “With respect to the Nizamuddin area, we all need to understand and appreciate that this is not the time to do fault finding. What is important for us is to take action as per our containment process in whatever areas we find a case,” Lav Agarwal, Joint Secretary in the Health Ministry, said at a press briefing. read more

It could be up to six months before life in the UK returns to “normal”, England’s deputy chief medical officer has said.

Speaking at the government’s daily coronavirus briefing, Dr Jenny Harries added: “This is not to say we would be in complete lockdown for six months.”

But, she added, “We have to be really, really responsible and keep doing what we’re all doing.”

It comes as the number of deaths of people with coronavirus reached 1,228.

Among those to have died with the virus is Amged El-Hawrani, a 55-year-old doctor and ear, nose and throat trainer at Queen’s Hospital Burton. His death was confirmed shortly before the press briefing. An organ transplant consultant died last week. read more

Quebec Premier François Legault and health officials provide an update on the province’s COVID-19 response plan.

Legault on Thursday urged residents to consider volunteering to help the elderly and other residents who may have difficulty with things like buying groceries during the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Two more COVID-19 related deaths were reported Thursday, bringing the total number in the province to six.

As of Thursday afternoon, there were 1,629 COVID-19 cases in Quebec and 43 people remain in intensive care. read more

Ontarians got an emergency alert sent to their cellphones, radios and TVs at 2 p.m. Friday, warning recent travellers to stay at home.

The alert will tell travellers returning to Ontario that they are required by law to self-isolate for 14 days as they are at high risk of spreading COVID-19.

The message will say that everyone should stay home to help stop the spread of the virus.

Health Minister Christine Elliott says Ontario is using every tool to ensure people are well informed about the steps they should take. read more
