The government borrowed a record £62bn last month to pay for the ballooning costs of the COVID-19 pandemic – especially the job retention scheme.

This is almost three times higher than the amount borrowed in April 2012 during the last economic recession.

Sources of government revenue – like VAT receipts – have fallen as consumers spend less on household goods and clothing.

Business Secretary Alok Sharma runs through the new rules coming into effect in England on Wednesday – including that people who cannot work from home should start going into work, so long as it is safe to do so. And that people can meet one other person from outside their household outside.

From the start of June some children may start being able to go back to school and businesses might be able to re-open. 

And from 4 July, some hospitality companies may be able to restart.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps promised more cycle lanes, wider pavements and extra charging points for electric vehicles as part of a £2bn package to allow people to travel without using public transport.

In the daily coronavirus briefing, he said that even if public transport reverts back to its regular service, with social distancing in place there would only be space for 10% of passengers.

He said encouraging people to cycle and walk to work will be a key part of easing the lockdown.

Dominic Raab has confirmed that Boris Johnson will be unveiling the road map to ease the coronavirus lockdown restrictions in England “with sensible changes” on Sunday.

The Foreign Secretary said that the existing measures remain in place for the bank holiday weekend to limit the spread of Covid-19.

“For the moment it is really important, particularly as people look towards a warm bank holiday weekend, that we continue to follow the guidance in place at this time,” he said.

Social commentator Prue MacSween says the people who are “getting into a lather” over the new COVID Trace app are the very people who engage with the government through the ATO, Medicare, and “mindlessly share their whole lives” on social media.

“if we come down with the virus, wouldn’t you want to warn the people you love and others who may have been exposed to you for 15 minutes or more,” she said.

Ms MacSween noted if the country is truly serious about “eradicating this scourge that has killed around 76 Australians,” then why would any “sound minded person not want to download it”. read more
