Alberta’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw, along with Premier Jason Kenney, provided an update on the province’s COVID-19 situation. It was announced that the province has ordered all non-essential businesses to close due to the pandemic.

The provincial government announced some big changes Friday as the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases rose to 542 in Alberta.

Kenney said the restriction on mass gatherings was being tightened. People can no longer gather in groups of under 50; they must be smaller than 15. That includes indoor and outdoor events, the premier said, like weddings and funerals. He also stressed the two-metre social distancing rule must be observed. read more

The message will say that everyone should stay home to help stop the spread of the virus.

Health Minister Christine Elliott says Ontario is using every tool to ensure people are well informed about the steps they should take. read more

The British government has unveiled another massive income support scheme, this time for 5 million or so self-employed people, many of whom face financial ruin from the shock of the coronavirus pandemic.

Treasury chief Rishi Sunak said the new Self-Employed Income Support Scheme will replicate the one he announced last week for those workers that firms retained rather than lay off.

Sunak said the government will pay self-employed people, who have been adversely affected by the coronavirus outbreak, a grant worth 80% of their average monthly profits over the past three years, up to 2,500 pounds ($2,975) per month. read more

The province of Alberta is introducing penalties in an effort to ensure Albertans are following public health orders related to the COVID-19 crisis, Premier Jason Kenney announced on Wednesday.

At the same news conference, Kenney said the province’s total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 had increased by 61 compared to a day earlier, bringing the total to 419. read more

Countries that have locked down their populations to prevent the spread of the coronavirus need to use the time to find and attack the virus, the World Health Organization said on Wednesday.

“Asking people to stay at home and shutting down population movement is buying time, and reducing pressure on health systems. On their own these measures won’t extinguish epidemics,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

During Wednesday’s briefing, Ghebreyesus laid out six things that countries must do to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus, including ramping up production of testing for the virus, developing a clear plan to quarantine contacts and expanding the training of the healthcare workforce. read more

He called the street closures “a pilot program” and said sports like basketball would be banned in city parks, first on a voluntary basis as long as people comply, in rules agreed with New York City officials.

Cuomo added that New York state measures to control the coronavirus appear to be working as the rate of hospitalizations has slowed in recent days. read more
