Ontario’s first mobile coronavirus testing centre is now open. And as Tina Yazdani reports, the huge crowd that lined up outside the Scarborough site highlights the need for testing in an area hard hit by COVID-19.

A passenger who traveled on a special flight from Germany to China has tested positive for the coronavirus. The chartered flight was carrying 180 passengers from Frankfurt to Tianjin after they received special permission to travel from the Chinese authorities. Many are executives with German companies, and the deal was brokered by the German Chamber of Commerce. China has barred most non-citizens from entering the country to prevent the introduction of new infections. World Health Organization (WHO) officials have warned that the first wave of the coronavirus outbreak could include a second peak.

It warned countries – even those that had successfully suppressed the virus and are relaxing restrictions put in place to combat the disease it causes – to remain “on high alert”.

“We may get a second peak in this wave. This happened during pandemics in the past,”

Dr Michael Ryan, WHO’s emergencies chief, told reporters in Geneva on Monday. read more

In Edmonton, Jason Kenney, the premier of Alberta, announces that on May 14, 2020, his province will proceed with the first stage of its plan to ease public-health restrictions that are in place due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease) pandemic. In Calgary and Brooks, where cases of COVID-19 are more prevalent, the easing of restrictions will take place over a longer timeframe. In China, 460,000 businesses closed during the first quarter due to the CCP virus pandemic. Shortly after work resumed, Guangzhou Railway Station had a surge of people who were out of work, returning to their hometowns.

Trials for a new COVID-19 vaccine began on humans at Oxford University in the UK on Thursday.

Two volunteers took part part in the trials with one given the new vaccine and another given a ‘control’ which will not prevent the virus.

The global pandemic has sickened nearly 2,68 million people, killed more than 187,000 worldwide, crippled economies and forced restrictions on the movement of millions of people in an effort to stop the virus from spreading further and overwhelming health care systems. read more

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney, along with Dr. Deena Hinshaw, chief medical officer of health, and other provincial officials delivered an update on COVID-19 Wednesday and spoke about the ongoing work to protect public health.

Alberta confirmed five COVID-19-related fatalities, bringing the province’s total number of deaths from the virus to 66 as of April 22.

Kenney also said 70 Albertans are hospitalized with the virus, 18 of whom are in intensive care units.

Hinshaw reported that the province had identified its first COVID-19 case on a First Nation. She said Alberta Health Services is working with Sucker Creek First Nation to follow up on the case, and that the individual is currently self-isolating. read more

British Columbia provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix provided an update on the COVID-19 outbreak in the province on Wednesday.

B.C. has recorded three new deaths due to COVID-19, including the first related fatality in the Interior region. Seventy-five people in the province have now died of the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, said Henry, as she confirmed 44 new cases.

About 61 per cent of B.C.’s 1,561 confirmed COVID-19 patients have fully recovered. Of the remaining cases, 131 patients are in hospital, with 59 of them in intensive care. read more

London’s new NHS Nightingale Hospital could need a staggering 16,000 members of staff to treat coronavirus patients should it reach full capacity.

The new 4,000-bed temporary facility at the ExCel convention centre is due to open this week despite building work only starting last Wednesday.

Split into more than 80 wards containing 42 beds each, the Nightingale will become one of the biggest hospitals in the world, according to its chief operating officer Natalie Forrest. read more

The Department of Health has confirmed that the 28-year-old woman who was said to have died of the Covid -19 infact tested negative for the virus. The first female patient, a 48-year -old tested positive for Covid-19 whilst the other patient was a suspected case based on her clinical presentation.
The clinicians who tested her reported that she presented respiratory distress at the hospital, however, her laboratory test results came out negative.
Both women passed away as the lockdown kicked in.
The Western Cape has recorded the second-highest number of people infected with the coronavirus – after Gauteng. read more
