Alberta’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw provided an update on the most recent numbers of COVID-19 cases in the province Thursday and the government’s ongoing response to the pandemic.

The province’s top doctor said there were 33 new cases of COVID-19 confirmed in Alberta, bringing the total number of active cases to 926. She said 5,710 people have recovered.

Fifty-nine Albertans were in hospital as of Thursday, six of whom were in intensive care units. More than 4,000 lab tests were done in the last 24 hours. read more

27 more people have died of COVID-19 related complications in South Africa, bringing the national death toll to 339. The number of infections has also increased to 18 003.

The Business Secretary has outlined plans to develop a vaccine as coronavirus-related deaths have increased to 34,636 in the UK.

In the daily coronavirus briefing, Alok Sharma said if trials of Oxford’s vaccine are successful, AstraZeneca will work to make 30 million doses available to the UK by September.

He said another £93m will be put into the building of a vaccine centre – now scheduled to open in summer 2021 – which would be able to produce enough vaccines for the entire UK population within six months. read more

The total number of COVID-19 deaths in the UK has now reached 36,591 according to the Office for National Statistics.

The number of new deaths fell by over 2,000, the smallest increase for a month. Care home deaths are now making up an increasing share of the total number of deaths in the UK.

During an event at the White House on Monday, President Trump told CBS News White House correspondent Weijia Jiang to “ask China” when pressed on the rising death toll caused by the coronavirus outbreak in the U.S. CBS News chief Washington correspondent Major Garrett joins CBSN’s Elaine Quijano to discuss.

A further 269 people diagnosed with COVID-19 have died in the UK, taking the overall total to 31,855.

It is the lowest daily figure since March 29, when there were 214 fatalities in a 24-hour period.

Ontario’s chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams provided an update Friday on the latest COVID-19 cases in the province and discussed the public health agency’s ongoing response to the pandemic.

Ontario reported 477 new cases of the COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, on Friday, bringing the provincial total to 19,598 cases. The death toll has risen to 1,540, as 63 more deaths were reported. Meanwhile, 13,990 people have recovered from COVID-19, which is 71.4 per cent of cases. read more

17 more South Africans have succumbed to the coronavirus which brings the total death toll to 178.
This comes as the country reported a record number of new daily infections. The Health Ministry says it’s recorded 663 new cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 8895.

– The coronavirus has also inspired people to be more innovative to deal with some of the challenges that the pandemic has posed. Companies are adapting to changing demands. The US company Hatch Exhibits has gone from building tradeshow booths to protective equipment for health care workers facing a dire shortage amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
– Lockdowns imposed to limit the spread of the coronavirus have reduced traffic and pollution. In some places that’s has allowed nature to make a comeback. In Thailand it has emboldened dolphins and another animals to reappear.
– More than 3-point-8 Million people have been infected with the coronavirus globally, and nearly 270-thousand have died.
– A new study by the World Health Organization projects that up to 190-thousand people in Africa could die of COVID-19 in the first year — if the outbreak is not contained.
– Iran’s state news agency has said Friday prayers will resume in mosques in 146 cities where the infection risk is considered minimal.
– Afghanistan’s national health minister has tested positive for the coronavirus. The World Bank has approved 400 million dollars in aid to help the country’s shaky economy weather the crisis.

The Western Cape remains the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak in South Africa. It’s currently recording the highest number of infections and deaths. Premier Alan Winde on Thursday gave a media update on the province. Community transmission is well established and numbers are expected to increase as the virus continues to spread.

British Columbia’s provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and health minister Adrian Dix provided an update on the latest COVID-19 cases in the province and discussed the government’s ongoing response to the pandemic on Thursday.

Dr. Henry reported 33 new COVID-19 cases in the province, as well as two new deaths. Both individuals were in long term care homes.

The province’s death toll is now at 126, with a total of 2,288 confirmed cases. About 66 per cent of those patients have fully recovered. read more

The UK now has the worst ‘official’ death toll in Europe – but the ‘real’ picture is yet to emerge.

Shock statistics today revealed 29,648 deaths in England and Wales involved coronavirus up to April 24 – higher than Italy’s current total of 29,079.

It comes as then Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, is expected to reveal his ‘road map’ to returning Britain to normality this Sunday.

There was a slight fall in the total number of deaths registered in England and Wales in the week ending 24 April – driven by a decrease in the number of hospital deaths, according to new figures.

Ontario’s chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams released the province’s latest COVID-19 numbers on Saturday, confirming that there were 511 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of cases in the province to 17,119.

He added that there were 55 new deaths reported in the province, bringing the total fatalities attributed to the virus to 1,176.

Over 11,300 cases are considered revolved, which makes up 66.5 per cent of all confirmed cases in Ontario.

Saturday’s report marks an increase in cases of 3.1 per cent compared to the day prior, while Friday saw an increase of 2.6 per cent. read more

Spain, the European country with the most coronavirus cases, has now surpassed 25,000 deaths. But the number of new infections is on the decline, and the country has begun easing some of its strict lockdown measures. For seven weeks, only one person per household was allowed to leave their homes to go grocery shopping or walk their dog. But starting today, Spaniards are allowed to go outside to exercise again, albeit while still under restrictions.

British Columbia’s provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and health minister Adrian Dix provided an update on the latest COVID-19 cases in the province and discussed the government’s ongoing response to the pandemic on Thursday.

Dr. Henry reported 25 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday and two additional deaths. There are 2,112 total cases, with 1,322 having recovered.

She also said that the province won’t have any large groups gathering this summer, but people can look at making their contact circles “slightly bigger.” read more

Total Covid-19 cases in India have climbed to 33,050 with 1,074 confirmed deaths. Maharashtra has reported a total of 9,915 cases with 432 deaths followed by Gujarat and Delhi with 4,082 and 3,439 Covid cases respectively.
