New York City will begin closing streets to traffic and ban close contact sports in city parks to help combat the spread of the novel coronavirus, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Wednesday.

He called the street closures “a pilot program” and said sports like basketball would be banned in city parks, first on a voluntary basis as long as people comply, in rules agreed with New York City officials.

Cuomo added that New York state measures to control the coronavirus appear to be working as the rate of hospitalizations has slowed in recent days. read more

He called on President Donald Trump on Tuesday to use the Defense Production Act to secure more medical equipment and asked Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar to release the 20,000 ventilators in the U.S. stockpile to New York. Cases across the state are doubling about every three days — standing at 25,665 as of Tuesday.

In December 2019 the Chinese authorities notified the world that a virus was spreading through their communities. In the following months it spread to other countries, with cases doubling within days. This virus is the “Severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus 2”, that causes the disease called COVID19, and that everyone simply calls Coronavirus. read more

Daegu’s usually bustling downtown streets were nearly deserted on Friday as people wearing face masks lined up at clinics seeking testing for the new coronavirus, as South Korea’s government declared a health emergency in the city.

Schools were shuttered, churches told worshipers to stay away and some mass gatherings were banned as cases of the new virus swelled.

Daegu, a southeastern city of 2.5 million that is the country’s fourth-largest, emerged as the focus of government efforts to contain the disease known as COVID-19. read more

Italy has expanded its response to the coronavirus by locking down the entire country. Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte says that as of Tuesday morning, travel restrictions will apply to the whole of Italy, not just the north as was previously the case.
Meanwhile, more than 9,000 people in Italy are infected with COVID-19 – and so far, more than 640 people have died.

Across the world the number of coronavirus cases has now topped one hundred thousand. The figure in the UK stands at one hundred and sixty three – the highest twenty four hour increase – and a second person has died.

Kurdish authorities in Iraq’s Kurdistan region imposed a curfew from midnight Saturday, forcing residents to stay inside following the outbreak of COVID-19.

Streets in Erbil and Sulaimaniya were empty as police officers patrolled abandoned markets and stopped cars to enforce the curfew. Erbil Mayor Nabiz Abdul-Hameed said the curfew would last for 48 hours until Monday.

British Columbia’s provincial health officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, announced seven new cases of the novel coronavirus on Wednesday, bringing the total number of cases in the province to 46.

Among the new cases is the first reported on Vancouver Island, which Henry said is one of three cases linked to travel to Egypt.

Henry said health officials have also identified two new cases of community transmission through B.C.’s influenza surveillance testing.
