American government officials inside Donald Trump’s White House are actively discussing putting troops near the Canadian borders in light of U.S. border security concerns around the coronavirus pandemic, sources tell Global News.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed the news while giving his daily briefing to reporters from Rideau Cottage, acknowledging that conversations are taking place.

“Canada and the United States have the longest un-militarized border in the world and it is very much in both of our interests for it to remain that way,” he said. read more

The British government has unveiled another massive income support scheme, this time for 5 million or so self-employed people, many of whom face financial ruin from the shock of the coronavirus pandemic.

Treasury chief Rishi Sunak said the new Self-Employed Income Support Scheme will replicate the one he announced last week for those workers that firms retained rather than lay off.

Sunak said the government will pay self-employed people, who have been adversely affected by the coronavirus outbreak, a grant worth 80% of their average monthly profits over the past three years, up to 2,500 pounds ($2,975) per month. read more

Premier François Legault and government officials update the province’s response to COVID-19 pandemic within the province.

The Quebec government confirmed Wednesday that another two people have died as a result of the novel coronavirus pandemic, bringing the total number of deaths in the province to six.

As of Wednesday there were 1,339 cases in Quebec, an increase of 326 from the previous day. There are 78 people who have been hospitalized in Quebec due to COVID-19 and 35 people are in intensive care. read more

The province of Alberta is introducing penalties in an effort to ensure Albertans are following public health orders related to the COVID-19 crisis, Premier Jason Kenney announced on Wednesday.

Kenney said as a result, the province is “legally requiring people to act responsibly” as opposed to just asking people to do so. At the same news conference, Kenney said the province’s total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 had increased by 61 compared to a day earlier, bringing the total to 419. read more

The rapidly spreading coronavirus outbreak continues to upend life around the world as more countries tighten quarantine measures. President Trump has downplayed the dangers of the pandemic, pressing that some Americans could return to work despite the advice of health experts. More than 46,000 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in the United States, although experts say the true number is much higher.

As of Wednesday, eight new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in New Brunswick, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 26.

During a provincial update, Dr. Jennifer Russell, the province’s chief medical officer of health, said the cases are all related to travel.

Russell said the new cases involve individuals between the ages of 10 and 70.

As of Wednesday, Premier Blaine Higgs, who was also at the press briefing, announced there will be restrictions for all travellers coming from outside the province. read more

Countries that have locked down their populations to prevent the spread of the coronavirus need to use the time to find and attack the virus, the World Health Organization said on Wednesday.

“Asking people to stay at home and shutting down population movement is buying time, and reducing pressure on health systems. On their own these measures won’t extinguish epidemics,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

During Wednesday’s briefing, Ghebreyesus laid out six things that countries must do to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus, including ramping up production of testing for the virus, developing a clear plan to quarantine contacts and expanding the training of the healthcare workforce. read more
