Members of the coronavirus task force are expected to hold a press briefing Monday as retailers and small businesses struggle to stay afloat and lawmakers fail to reach a deal on additional funding for the SBA loan program. The Covid-19 outbreak has spread to dozens of countries globally, with more than 761,900 cases in the United States and at least 40,724 deaths, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

The coronavirus pandemic has caused both human and economic devastation around the world but optimism that authorities are on top of the spread, continues to firm here in Australia.

0:18 Victoria recorded just one additional case overnight, while New South Wales recorded six cases.

0:30 Nearly 3.5 million people could lose their jobs, according to new analysis into the economic impact of the virus. Treasury has forecast unemployment will rise to 10% in the June quarter but the Grattan Institute says up to 26% of workers could lose their job. read more

The government has rejected suggestions that children could return to school in England in the next few weeks. The Education Secretary, Gavin Williamson, declined to give a date for them to reopen, saying the government’s tests would need to be met before pupils could return to school as part of any easing of coronavirus restrictions.

Meanwhile ministers remains under intense pressure over shortages of protective clothing for health workers and especially the medical gowns used in hospital intensive care wards. read more

Two recent antibody testing studies in the United States may give insight into how widespread COVID-19 actually is – which may also mean the fatality rate is lower than initially thought – but there may be problems with the accuracy of using this data in a prediction model. Dr. Seheult also illustrates the key differences between different types of hypoxemia (low blood oxygen): V/Q mismatch, shunting, and diffusion abnormalities. COVID-19 infection may involve all three of these to varying degrees and MIGET (multiple inert gas elimination technique) studies may unlock some of the mystery. read more
