US President Donald Trump warned that China could face consequences if it was “knowingly responsible” for the coronavirus pandemic, as he ratcheted up criticism of Beijing over its handling of the outbreak.

“It could have been stopped in China before it started and it wasn’t,” Mr Trump said at a White House briefing. “And now the whole world is suffering because of it.”

COVID-19 update – President Donald Trump said China is “way ahead of US” in Coronavirus death toll at the US taskforce daily briefing.

He said: “We’re not number one, China is number one.

“China is number one by a lot. It’s not even close.

“They are way ahead of us in terms of deaths.

“You know it. I know it. They know it.

“But you don’t want to report it. Why? You’ll have to explain that.”

When being questioned about the repercussions for who started the coronavirus outbreak, Trump said: “If they (China) were knowingly responsible then yes there should be consequences…” read more

Trump joins the Coronavirus Task Force to update the public. Trump asks Democrats to continue funding the Paycheck Protection Act.

During a daily briefing alongside the coronavirus task force on Friday, U.S. President Trump discussed new coronavirus numbers out of China as well as reports on the origin of the virus.

Trump was asked about China doubling its figures of deaths in Wuhan on Friday in what the Chinese government said was a statistical correction, with Trump saying in reply that the U.S. can’t have the most deaths from the coronavirus, “the most in the world has to be China.”

The president was also asked about U.S. intelligence reports that they’re investigating the virus emanating from a lab in Wuhan, China. “They talk about a certain type of bat, but that bat wasn’t in that area. That bat wasn’t sold at that wet zone.” read more

The Chinese city of Wuhan, where the coronavirus originated last year, has raised its official Covid-19 death toll by 50%, adding 1,290 fatalities.

Wuhan officials attributed the new figure to updated reporting and deaths outside hospitals. China has insisted there was no cover-up.

It has been accused of downplaying the severity of its virus outbreak.

Wuhan’s 11 million residents spent months in strict lockdown conditions, which have only recently been eased.

The latest official figures bring the death toll in the city in China’s central Hubei province to 3,869, increasing the national total to more than 4,600. read more

The Qingming festival, also known as Tomb Sweeping Day, is usually a time when people visit the graves of friends and family.

But amid fears of another Covid-19 outbreak, the government has advised people to stay away and maintain social distancing as Stephen McDonell reports.

China’s vast surveillance system has come to the fore in its attempt to monitor and control the spread of coronavirus.

According to official statistics, the number of newly confirmed cases in China has dropped dramatically – from thousands a day to nearly zero.

Italy has announced its second death from the coronavirus as the number of cases in the country more than quadruples. The World Health Organization has warned that the window of opportunity to contain a wider international spread of the epidemic is closing, and urged governments around the globe to act quickly as new cases show no link to China.
