Ontario Premier Doug Ford provided an update on Wednesday regarding the province’s efforts to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus. The premier was joined by Dr. Merrilee Fullerton, Minister of Long-Term Care, and Christine Elliott, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health.

Ford announced enhanced safety measures for long-term care facilities due to the high-risk seniors face of contracting COVID-19. The new plan entails that long-term care homes in the province facing novel coronavirus outbreaks will be targeted for testing and surveillance, the staff who work at these facilities will have expanded education on infection prevention and control, and the priority when it comes to personal protective equipment distribution will go toward long-term care facilities – in addition to other measures the Ford government hopes will ease the strain on these facilities. read more

Toronto Mayor John Tory, Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health Dr. Eileen de Villa, and Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg to provided an update on Toronto’s COVID-19 cases and city’s response to the pandemic on Thursday.

During the briefing, de Villa said that as of 12:30 p.m. ET on April 9, the city had 1,769 cases of COVID-19 in total. This number includes 1,519 confirmed cases and 250 probable cases of the illness.

Tory said that the municipal government has partnered up with a variety of mental health organizations to offer support to Torontonians during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of the organizations offering free mental health support include Kids Help Phone, Progress Place Warm Line, Toronto Seniors Help Line and more. read more

British Columbia’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Bonnie Henry and health minister Adrian Dix provided an update on the COVID-19 response in the province on Tuesday.

They announced that four more British Columbians had died as a result of the virus, bringing the province’s total to 43.

However, the number of new confirmed COVID-19 cases dropped again on Tuesday to its lowest in the last three weeks. Twenty-five new confirmed cases were reported, as opposed to the 26 new cases that were announced on Monday. read more

Prime Minister Scott Morrison announces new rental waivers and deferrals for commercial tenants hit by the impact of the coronavirus crisis.

Under the scheme landlords will have to reduce leases in proportion to the reduction in the tenant’s business. The waivers will have to account for at least 50 per cent of the reduction in business.

Australia’s coronavirus death toll has risen to 34, after four more deaths were recorded in NSW. Four men were confirmed to be the latest deaths in the state. Three of the men are believed to have acquired the illness on board the Ruby Princess cruise ship.

On Monday, Alberta’s provincial health officer Dr. Deena Hinshaw announced that there had been five new deaths from COVID-19, which she called “one of the hardest days yet.” The deaths bring the total to eight in the province.

Hinshaw also said 29 new cases had been confirmed over the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 690. She added that health officials said 65 cases in the province are believed to be a result of community transmission.

The total number of Albertans who have recovered from COVID-19 is 94. read more

During a Monday briefing with Toronto Public Health, Toronto Mayor John Tory warned that if people are caught defying city by-laws by continuing to use city parks and amenities closed due to COVID-19, they could be fined a minimum of $750. Tory said by-law officers and police will be conducted blitzes at public parks to ensure these rules are followed.

In addition, the city has reported that as of 1 p.m. ET on March 30, there are a total of 591 confirmed COVID-19 cases, up 50 since Sunday, said Dr. Eileen de Villa, medical officer of health for the City of Toronto. read more

Seventeen new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in Nova Scotia, bringing the province’s total to 90.

In a press conference Friday, the province said “most” of the new cases are connected to travel or a known case.

The 90 individuals affected range in age from under 10 to their mid-70s. Health officials say two are currently in hospital and three individuals have recovered and their cases of COVID-19 are considered resolved.

Cases have been identified in all parts of the province.

To date, Nova Scotia has 3,649 negative test results and 90 confirmed cases. read more

Ontario associate chief medical officer of health Dr. Barbara Yaffe announced three new deaths from COVID-19, two at a nursing home in the province, and a woman in her 80s in the Greater Toronto Area.

Yaffe said there were approximately 133 new cases, bringing the total to 993 confirmed cases in the province. She added Ontario will likely see the number of resolved cases go up above 200 in the coming days.

Ontario’s chief medical officer of health Dr. David Williams also spoke about the recently announced usage of the province’s emergency alert system to tell people returning from travel they must isolate for 14 days. He said the decision to bring in the alert now was another way to remind people it’s still a measure in place. read more
