The World Health Organization says the United States could become the new epicenter of the coronavirus.
The country is reporting more than 53,000 cases and counting, a day after the death toll jumped by more than a hundred in a single day. Despite the staggering numbers, President Trump wants the U.S. “opened up” in just a few weeks, by Easter.

Iranian cleric Mohammad Ali Mousavi Jazayeri warned Britain on Saturday about Tehran’s retaliation for the capture of an Iranian supertanker by Royal Marines in Gibraltar. “I am openly saying that Britain should be scared of Iran’s retaliatory measures over the illegal seizure of the Iranian oil tanker,” said the cleric, who is a member of the powerful clerical body, the Assembly of Experts. British Royal Marines seized the supertanker Grace 1 on Thursday for trying to take oil to Syria in violation of EU sanctions, a dramatic step that drew Tehran’s fury and could escalate its confrontation with the West. It comes as British flagged supertanker Pacfic Voyager is passing through the Persian Gulf this weekend.  Tehran yesterday threatened to seize British shipping in the Gulf in a direct response to the dramatic swoop by the marines with helicopters and fast boats in the early hours of Thursday.    Yesterday, Moshem Rezaei said Tehran had a “duty” to respond to the seizure of the Grace 1 over suspicions it was carrying oil to Bashar Assad’s Syrian regime in breach of EU sanctions. A detachment of Royal Marines from 42 Commando boarded the vessel on Thursday in a joint operation with the Royal Gibraltar Police. Writing on Twitter, Mr Rezaei, who led the Guard during the 1980s “tanker war” in the Gulf, said: “If England does not release the Iranian oil tanker, the duty… (of Iran) is to respond and seize one English oil tanker.” The warning came after Britain’s ambassador in Tehran, Rob Macaire, was summoned to the Iranian Foreign Ministry to explain the Government’s actions.    In a statement, the Gibraltar government said it had taken the decision to intercept the vessel and was not acting at the behest of any other country. It follows a claim by the Spanish authorities that the seizure of the tanker was made at the request of the United States which had been tracking its movements. “There has been no political request at any time from any government that the Gibraltar government should act or not act, on one basis or another,” the Gibraltar government said in a statement. “The decisions of Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar were taken totally independently, based on breaches of existing law and not at all based on extraneous political considerations.”    A spokesman said members of the crew were continuing to be questioned as inquiries continued aboard the ship. The 28 crew members – mainly Indian, Pakistani and Ukrainian nationals – were being interviewed as witnesses and were not being questioned under criminal procedures the spokesman added. The incident has occurred at a time of heightened tensions between the US and its allies and Iran over the unravelling nuclear deal between Tehran and leading international powers, including the UK. Last month President Donald Trump said he had made a last-minute decision to call off air strikes in retaliation for the shooting down by Iran of an unmanned US drone over the Gulf.    Earlier thi read more

LOS ANGELES — Communities in the Mojave Desert tallied damage and made emergency repairs to cracked roads and broken pipes Friday as aftershocks from Southern California’s largest earthquake in 20 years kept rumbling. The small town of Ridgecrest, close to the epicenter, assessed damage after several fires and multiple injuries that were blamed on the magnitude 6.4 quake. A shelter drew 28 people overnight, but not all of them slept inside amid the shaking. “Some people slept outside in tents because they were so nervous,” said Marium Mohiuddin of the American Red Cross. Damage appeared limited to desert areas, although the quake was felt widely, including in the Los Angeles region 150 miles (240 kilometers) away. The largest aftershock thus far — magnitude 5.4 — was also felt in LA before dawn Friday. Ridgecrest Regional Hospital remained closed as state inspectors assessed it, spokeswoman Jayde Glenn said. The hospital’s own review found no structural damage, but there were cracks in walls, broken water pipes and water damage. The hospital was prepared to help women in labor and to give triage care to emergency patients, Fifteen patients were evacuated to other hospitals after the quake, Glenn said. The quake did not appear to have caused major damage to roads and bridges in the area, but it did open three cracks across a short stretch of State Route 178 near the tiny town of Trona, said California Department of Transportation District Nine spokeswoman Christine Knadler. Those cracks were temporarily sealed, but engineers were investigating whether the two-lane highway was damaged beneath the cracks, Knadler said. Bridges in the area were also being checked. The Ridgecrest library was closed as volunteers and staff picked up hundreds of books that fell off shelves. The building’s cinderblock walls also had some cracks, said Charissa Wagner, library branch supervisor. Wagner was at her home in the small city of 29,000 people when a small foreshock hit, followed by the large one, putting her and her 11-year-old daughter on edge. “The little one was like, ‘Oh what just happened.’ The big one came later and that was scarier,” she said. The nearby Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake said in a statement late Thursday that no injuries were reported and so far all buildings had been found to be intact, but assessments continued across its vast acreage. Its workforce was ordered to not report on Friday. The earthquake knocked over a boulder that sat atop one of the rock spires at the Trona Pinnacles outside of Ridgecrest, a collection of towering rock formations that has been featured in commercials and films, said Martha Maciel, a Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman in California. Meanwhile, the nation’s second-largest city revealed plans to lower slightly the threshold for public alerts from its earthquake early warning app. But officials said the change was in the works before the quake, which gave scientists at the California Institute of Technology’s seismology lab 48 seconds of warning but did not trigger a public notification. “Our goal is to alert people who might experience potentially damaging shaking, not just feel the shaking,” said Robert de Groot, a spokesman for the U.S. Geological Survey’s ShakeAlert system, which is being developed for California, Oregon and Washington. The West Coast ShakeAlert system has provided non-public earthquake notifications on a daily basis to many test users, including emergency agencies, industries, transportation systems and schools. Late last year, the city of Los Angeles released a mobile app intended to provide ShakeAlert warnings for users within Los Angeles County. The trigger threshold for LA’s app required a magnitude 5 or greater and an estimate of level 4 on the separate Modified Mercali Intensity scale, the level at which there is potentially damaging shaking. Although Thursday’s quake was well above magnitude 5, the expected shaking for the Los Angeles area was level 3, de Groot said. A revision of the magnitude threshold down to 4.5 was already underway, but the shaking intensity level would remain at 4. The rationale is to avoid numerous ShakeAlerts for small earthquakes that do not affect people.
Construction of a network of seismic-monitoring stations for the West Coast is just over half complete, with most coverage in Southern California, San Francisco Bay Area and the Seattle-Tacoma area. Eventually, the system will send out alerts over the same system used for Amber Alerts to defined areas that are expected to be affected by a quake, de Groot said. California is partnering with the federal government to build the statewide earthquake warning system, with the goal of turning it on by June 2021. The state has already spent at least $25 million building it, including installing hundreds of seismic stations throughout the state. This year, Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom said the state needed $16.3…

Daily Star Online understands HMS Montrose – a Type 23 frigate – was on duty today as she guarded British shipping passing through the Strait of Hormuz. It is believed she escorted oil tanker Pacific Voyager as she sailed through the piece of sea that separates the United Arab Emirates from Iran. The waterway has been the scene of attacks of tankers this year amid a renewed flaring of tensions in the Gulf. Britain has been roped into the feud as the Royal Marines stopped a tanker at Gibraltar which is believed to have transporting Iranian oil to Syria.  Iran reacted furiously and outright threatened to board British ships – warning UK officials to “be scared”.   Royal Navy warship HMS Montrose – who is stationed in Bahrain – was on alert in the Strait of Hormuz this morning as Pacific Voyager passed Iran. The tanker had to be checked on by UK officials over the weekend as she stopped close to Iranian waters – sparking fears she had been boarded. Weighing 4,900 tons, the HMS Montrose carries a Wildcat helicopter and is bristling with weapons. She has a 4.5inch gun on her bow and carries the powerful Sea Ceptor anti-air missiles.  In a statement, the Ministry of Defence said: “The UK maintains a long standing maritime presence in the Gulf. “We are continuously monitoring the security situation there and are committed to maintaining freedom of navigation in accordance with international law.”      Iran has been squaring up to the West as it reels over the scrapping of the so-called nuclear deal by the US, which traded a pledge not to develop nukes for eased sanctions. The ayatollah has been demanding that nations such as Britain and its European allies pick-up the slack as Donald Trump’s administration imposes crushing new penalties. Britain however infuriated Iran last week when the Royal Marines seized the Grace 1 supertanker as she entered the Mediterranean. Commandos took the vessel without a shot being fired as it is suspected of breaching EU sanctions on the brutal Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad.    Iran responded by threatening to seize British ships in retaliation amid fears of a new tanker war in the Gulf.  Five oil tankers and a cargo ship have been attacked in the Gulf in the past two months. Tehran denies any involvement in the attacks, but they have been blamed by the US.  And in an escalation, Iran shot down a US drone – nearly prompting a limited strike by Washington before an 11th hour U-turn by Trump.    Iran has since broken its nuclear agreement by stepping up its enrichment of uranium. Tehran has said the measures are just for power plant fuel, and will not be used for the development of nukes. The foreign ministers of Britain, France and Germany, plus the foreign affairs chief of the European Union, said in a statement that Iran was “pursuing activities inconsistent with its commitments”. Trump’s administration argues the deal was too soft on Iran and it didn’t impact its missile programme of sponsor of terrorism. read more
