Update: As unemployment reaches record levels in California, Gov. Gavin Newson on April 15 has signed an executive order to extend the hours of the Employment Development Department’s call center to meet the demand. US President Donald Trump has instructed his administration to halt funding of the World Health Organization. Trump says the WHO failed in its early response to the coronavirus. The US president, who has himself come under fire for his handling of the pandemic, said the WHO should have done a better job of investigating initial reports in China. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres responded by saying that now was not the time to end support for the WHO. He said its work was “absolutely critical” to the global effort to combat COVID-19.
Singapore authorities have now made it mandatory to wear a mask when stepping out of the house, with immediate effect. The new requirement was announced on Tuesday (Apr 14) at a press conference given by the multi-ministry task force tackling COVID-19. “We remain in a critical situation,” Health Minister Gan Kim Yong said, noting the sharp increase in cases, in particular, among foreign workers in dormitories. U.S. President Donald Trump and the U.S. coronavirus task force provided an update on the COVID-19 crisis on Friday.
Trump said that “tremendous progress is being made” and that there are signs the COVID-19 curve in the country is beginning to level due to “aggressive” strategies including physical distancing. Trump added that he thinks the death toll will be “substantially” less than 100,000, which was initially predicted as a potential outcome of the pandemic in the U.S.
He also said that the medical supply for health care workers fighting the COVID-19 pandemic in the country is “in great shape,” and that the Department of Defense will also be sending 10 million N95 masks. Over 2 million virus tests have been completed and approximately 100,000 more are being conducted every day, stated Trump.

Alberta’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw, along with Premier Jason Kenney, provided an update on the province’s COVID-19 situation. It was announced that the province has ordered all non-essential businesses to close due to the pandemic.
The provincial government announced some big changes Friday as the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases rose to 542 in Alberta.
Kenney said the restriction on mass gatherings was being tightened. People can no longer gather in groups of under 50; they must be smaller than 15. That includes indoor and outdoor events, the premier said, like weddings and funerals. He also stressed the two-metre social distancing rule must be observed.
