RNC Night 1- It was a night designed to appeal to black voters and moderate white voters. Many of the speeches attempted to humanize Trump and make him appear more empathic. This was likely in response to last week’s DNC where Joe Biden’s empathy and kindness was one of the big takeaways.

Throughout the night a bit of revisionist history was on display regarding COVID. Speakers tried to argue that Trump has been decisive and effective on the coronavirus by putting in the travel ban from China, trying again to appeal to the moderate voter who’s concerned about healthcare and the economy. However, that’s going to be a tough argument to win…especially as we’re heading toward 180,000 dead from the virus, a slow economy, and no end in sight.

If there was a shared message between the DNC and RNC, it’s that they both painted a dark picture of America if the other party wins. Last week, Dems said we’d lose our country and democracy if Trump wins. This week, we’re going to hear we’d lose our country and freedom if Biden wins. Both messages are designed to make Americans fearful. The RNC’s flavor is to try and connect Biden with the left. You heard “the radical left” and that democrats allow destruction via looters and rioters in your neighborhoods several times. The goal here is to appeal to moderate white voters, especially suburban women.

The night also attempted to appeal to black voters & show that Trump is not a racist. Speakers included four Black Trump supporters including Herschel Walker who shared that he’s been friends with Trump for years and that not only are they friends, Trump is definitely not a racist. His speech was pretty effective.

As was Tim Scott. He was the bright hopeful conservative of the night, painting a picture of perhaps the future GOP. This statement will stand out amongst the rest. He said “Our family went from cotton to Congress in one lifetime. And that’s why I believe the next American century can be better than the last.” That is a great line.

Nikki Haley, the former UN Ambassador under Trump, who is looking to run for President in the future. In her speech she criticized Biden heavily and praised Trump. In a way, she’s presenting herself as Trump-lite for the future. Her hope was also to play to Trump’s base while being a calming presence for moderates.
