Coronavirus outbreak: Finance Minister Bill Morneau chairs UN roundtable on COVID-19 economic impact

Canadian Federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau chaired virtual round table with the Head of Research and Capacity Development at the UN-Habitat Dr. Eduardo Lopez Moreno on Friday to discuss the impact on COVID-19 on urban economies.

Many Canadian Mayors, Councillors and Chairs joined the meeting and spoke about their regions’ progress to recover local and regional economies amid the pandemic.

Minister Morneau highlighted some of the Canadian government’s initiatives to help people during the pandemic including the Canada Emergency Response Benefit and stressed on that the government’s work would be “imperfect by definition, because we won’t be able to solve everything for everyone.”

Morneau added that the federal government is determined to work hard and help the most impacted by the pandemic, saying that COVID-19 had a significant impact on women, people in low-income categories and on young people who lost their jobs due to the pandemic.

The event was a preparatory meeting of Urban Economy Forum 202 on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of United Nations & World Environment Day.
