Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the biggest risk factors for coronavirus are age, gender, living in a city and being black or from a minority ethnic background.
In the daily coronavirus briefing, he said the government is determined to “get to the bottom of this” and “find ways of closing the gap”.
Referring to COVID-19’s disproportionate impact on BAME people, he said: “People are angry about racial injustice and I get that. Black lives matter.”

Global deaths from covid-19 are on the wane. Most countries and states are starting to remove lockdown restrictions. And now we’re starting to see medical claims that the SARS2 virus is losing potency.
Is the covid-19 pandemic finally over?
Not quite, cautions Chris. Yes, there are encouraging signs that fatalities are slowing, but there are still a lot of unknowns to address before we breathe a sigh of relief. The fact that lockdowns are ending at the same time thousands are coming into close quarters at protests will tell us in just a few weeks how worried we’ll need to be about a resurgence in infections.

British Columbia’s provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and health minister Adrian Dix are expected to provide an update on the latest COVID-19 cases in the province and to discuss the government’s ongoing response to the pandemic on Tuesday.
Dr. Henry reported 24 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday.
She also said that one more person has died from COVID-19 in a long-term care home in the Fraser Health region, bringing the total number of deaths to 165.

The federal government continues to add to the supply of personal protective equipment and related medical equipment needed to fight COVID-19.
The prime minister says the race to accumulate what Canada needs requires a balance between shopping all over the world and continuing to bolster manufacturing capabilities at home.
Justin Trudeau pointed out that over half the face shields acquired so far have been made by a Canadian company that expanded its workforce to contribute to the effort.
He says Canada has what’s required to meet the provinces’ demands at the moment but as the slow reopening of the country begins, more will be needed.
France begins a second phase of easing lockdown rules on Tuesday as official figures show the novel coronavirus outbreak continuing to diminish in the country following an initial loosening of restrictions that began on May 11.
