With coronavirus restrictions rapidly easing – and Winter now here – we’re warned that there could be renewed growth in infections in Australia.

It will be some time before we see if there are any signs of a second wave – but at least one country is already experiencing one.

World Health Organization (WHO) officials have warned that the first wave of the coronavirus outbreak could include a second peak.

It warned countries – even those that had successfully suppressed the virus and are relaxing restrictions put in place to combat the disease it causes – to remain “on high alert”.

“We may get a second peak in this wave. This happened during pandemics in the past,”

Dr Michael Ryan, WHO’s emergencies chief, told reporters in Geneva on Monday. read more

She speaks on “Bloomberg Surveillance.”

US health officials are warning about the possibility of a new wave of coronavirus infections as more than two-thirds of states begin to open.

The death toll in the United States is nearly 90,000, making it the worst-affected country in the world.

And although the overall number of new cases in the country is on the decline, in some states, the number of infections is actually on the rise.

The UK might be past the peak of the coronavirus pandemic, but it does not necessarily follow that we are through the worst of it.

Even with a gradual easing of lockdown rules and a cautious plan to return to normality, experts believe there may yet be a second wave and a second peak of infections.

When deciding whether to start easing lockdown restrictions in the UK, the government is looking at the risk of a second wave of the virus hitting the country. Several European countries have started to ease their lockdown measures to varying degrees of success. Last night Boris Johnson said that the UK is past the peak of its coronavirus pandemic. The government has warned the reproductive rate of the virus must be below one to avoid a second peak of coronavirus. This means that on average someone with the virus passes it on to less than one person. read more
