A grim global milestone in the unfolding coronavirus pandemic but in Australia there’s some hope – the number of cases is showing signs of stabilising.

In this update:
0:00 There are now more than one million confirmed cases of covid-19 worldwide… More than fifty thousand people have died.

0:10 Australia has more than 5000 confirmed cases. A man in his 80s has died overnight in Victoria, taking the national toll to 25.

0:17 Two of those fatalities are linked to the Ruby Princess cruise ship, which remains off New South Wales. It’s one of 21 cruise ships being monitored by border force, with officials refusing to allow them to disembark. read more

Ontario Premier Doug Ford and government officials are expected to provide an update on the province’s ongoing response to COVID-19 on Thursday.

The premier will be joined by Christine Elliott, Minister of Health, and Michael Tibollo, Associate Minister of Mental Health and Addictions.

Ford announced on Wednesday that municipalities had been told they must enforce self-isolation measures as the province continues to try and contain the spread of COVID-19.

Governor Asa Hutchinson and Dr. Nathaniel Smith, Secretary of the Arkansas Department of Health, will provide an update to media this afternoon, Wednesday, April 1, regarding Arkansas’s COVID-19 response.

B.C. Premier John Horgan and energy minister Bruce Ralston will make an announcement around measures to combat the COVID-19 pandemic in the province.

Horgan announced that he has extended the province-wide state of emergency until April 14 in his first televised address Tuesday night amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

Montreal’s regional director of health Dre. Mylène Drouin provided the daily update on the city’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic on Wednseday.

Dr. Drouin announced a total of 2090 cases of COVID-19 in Montreal, with 132 hospitalizations and 26 cases in intensive care.

She said that public health expects more cases to be announced in the coming days as they were dealing with a backlog in the labs in the past few days.

Montreal’s mayor Valérie Plante announced earlier on Wednesday that the city’s parks could close to the public if people gather there during the novel coronavirus health crisis. read more

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said today Parliament will be recalled to pass new legislation to deliver enhanced COVID-19 emergency aid measures.

World Health Organization officials provide an update on the COVID-19 pandemic.

There are over 800,000 cases worldwide and the disease has killed over 40,000 people.

Dr. David Nabarro, a special envoy to the World Health Organization (WHO) on the pandemic, said about a third of the world’s countries were on lockdown.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford will be joined by Deputy Premier and minister of health Christine Elliott, Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, and Rod Phillips, Minister of Finance, to make an announcement on COVID-19 response in the province.

On Tuesday, Ford announced that publicly-funded schools would remain closed until at least May 1 for teachers and May 4 for students. Private schools and child care centre closures have also been extended for two weeks, with Education Minister Stephen Lecce explaining the shorter closure for these institutions is because they fall under the province’s emergency order, extended to mid-April, as opposed to the Education Act. read more

Toronto Mayor John Tory joins Dr. Eileen de Villa, medical officer of health for Toronto, and other officials provided an update on the city’s response to COVID-19 on Wednesday.

On Monday, Tory announced that the city would be cancelling all public events through June 30, including the Pride Parade, in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19 and ensure the safety of the community, as the city nears almost 800 total cases of the novel coronavirus disease.

In addition, the mayor said the TTC will be adding additional buses on typically busier routes to help avoid crowding and ensure distance can be maintained for all essential workers who need to take public transit. read more
