British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and director of Public Health England Yvonne Doyle provided an update on the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic on Monday.
During the briefing, Johnson unveiled the nation’s retail reopening plan as restrictions begin to loosen amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Starting June 1, outdoor markets will be allowed to operate, subject to all premises being made “COVID secure” as the transmission of the coronavirus is lower outdoors, Johnson said. The prime minister also announced that starting June 15, the British government will allow more non-essential retail to reopen.
“Operation Warp Speed” hopes to develop and distribute a coronavirus vaccine by the end of 2020 — a goal that outpaces what most experts believe is possible. President Trump says the country will return to normal with or without one.

U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson unveiled new coronavirus lockdown rules in England, including a controversial “stay alert” slogan. His approach is on par with other European countries, like Italy or Spain. Elizabeth Palmer reports.
Transport Secretary Grant Shapps promised more cycle lanes, wider pavements and extra charging points for electric vehicles as part of a £2bn package to allow people to travel without using public transport.
In the daily coronavirus briefing, he said that even if public transport reverts back to its regular service, with social distancing in place there would only be space for 10% of passengers.
He said encouraging people to cycle and walk to work will be a key part of easing the lockdown.

The provincial government announced a $4 per hour raise over the next four months for front-line workers who are helping fight COVID-19.
Workers will also receive a monthly bonus of $250 if they work more than 100 hours in a month over the next four months.
The premier said the bonus will be eligible for workers with long-term care homes, retirement homes, emergency shelters, supportive housing, social services congregate care settings, corrections institutions and youth justice facilities, home and community care providers and some staff in hospitals.

In the United States more than 100,000 people have been infected with the coronavirus; that’s more confirmed cases than in any other country. But according to health experts the country needs to do more testing to reveal the extent of the outbreak. To help achieve that, the US Food and Drug Administration has approved a new rapid test from Abbott Laboratories. The company says the test can detect Covid-19 in about five minutes and is so small that it can be used in almost any healthcare setting. Is it too good to be true?
The British government has unveiled another massive income support scheme, this time for 5 million or so self-employed people, many of whom face financial ruin from the shock of the coronavirus pandemic.
Treasury chief Rishi Sunak said the new Self-Employed Income Support Scheme will replicate the one he announced last week for those workers that firms retained rather than lay off.
Sunak said the government will pay self-employed people, who have been adversely affected by the coronavirus outbreak, a grant worth 80% of their average monthly profits over the past three years, up to 2,500 pounds ($2,975) per month.
